Rapiscan Laboratories manufactures radiation equipments. We develop and test X-ray imaging systems and equipment to the airport and security industries.
Our Advanced Technology team is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to aid in the design and development of state-of-the-art chemical and trace detection products. The engineer will be an active and contributing member of a world-class design team based in Andover, MA. The engineer will design detection products, including machined/molded parts and assemblies, and create detailed design and assembly drawings in a fast paced, interactive, cross-functional team environment. A strong customer focus is essential.
Responsibilities
Designs and builds mechanical hardware for our trace detection equipment as part of our Integrated Product Development Process (IPDP) and external contracts
Prototype, assemble, analyze and approve new mechanical designs for release
Support product quality improvement and implement material cost saving projects through product redesign
Design structural products / parts using machined components, injection molding and sheet metal forming
Develop and maintain and communicate design plans and schedules
Support design and engineering documentation aspects of the program including product / tooling costs, mechanical product performance, and engineering change orders (ECOs)
Interface with the Rapiscan Science and Technology Group, supply chain, critical technical vendors, manufacturing, product management and quality departments
Participate in validation and verification (V&V) processes for components and products
Work with vendors and cross-functional development team to reduce time to market, product cost and procurement lead-time while meeting design objectives
Provide sustaining engineering support for released products, including changes for improved manufacturability, reduced cost, increased reliability, and/or improved performance; assists in the preparation and incorporation of ECO's
Provide regular status reports, written and/or verbal, to cross-functional project team members
Ensure adherence to business policies, EH&S, legal requirements, ethics

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and 2 years’ experience in hardware design
Familiarity with machined parts & sheet metal design
Familiarity with die casting and/or injection molding design
Electrical enclosure and wiring/cabling design
Experience with 3-D printing to speed prototyping processes
Experience using 3D solid modeling SolidWorks (SW), Product Data Management (PDM) tools such as Agile
Familiarity with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation and thermal analysis simulation tools in SolidWorks
Experience with hands on design and development of prototypes and test fixtures
Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to communicate with scientists, electrical and mechanical engineers, suppliers, production, manufacturing engineers, quality, and customers
Proficiency in Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point
Team player with strong facilitation / interpersonal skills and a demonstrated commitment to continuous process improvement
Desired Characteristics
Familiarity with the pneumatics and the measurement and control of liquids and gases
Strong analytical design skills including experience designing using CAD software
Demonstrated record of meeting cost, schedule and performance goals on complex projects
Externally focused in terms of manufacturing, customer & market requirements
Ability to drive program deliverables and identify and resolve technical and program issues / decisions
