Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong background in low carbon technologies to join our growing engineering team. You will be responsible for the design, delivery, and management of renewable energy projects, including heat pumps, district heating, solar PV, and other sustainable solutions. The ideal candidate will bring both technical expertise and project leadership, with the ability to deliver high-quality solutions from conception through to handover.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce design data and perform sizing calculations for projects, including:
  • Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP)
  • Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
  • District and Communal Heating Systems
  • Solar PV and other low carbon technologies
  • Lead and manage large-scale engineering projects from bid stage through to completion and client handover
  • Conduct site surveys and produce detailed client reports
  • Undertake technology assessments and support clients with funding applications
  • Provide peer review support across the engineering team in collaboration with the Head of Engineering and Head of Design
  • Produce full technical designs, reports, and documentation for tender submissions, active projects, and as-built handovers
  • Carry out technical surveys in domestic and commercial properties for energy or water efficiency upgrades

Key Performance Indicators

  • Support the development and optimisation of internal design processes
  • Mentor and support junior engineers, identifying and addressing knowledge gaps
  • Deliver projects on time, to specification, and within budget
  • Maintain strong client relationships and ensure satisfaction throughout all project phases
  • Uphold current best practices and industry standards across all technical work

Required Experience & Skills

  • Proven experience in engineering/energy analysis and hydraulic or renewable heating system design
  • Strong understanding of low carbon technologies including GSHP, ASHP, Solar PV, Battery Storage, CHP, and grid connections
  • Proficiency in modelling energy consumption and carbon emissions
  • Ability to interpret and produce design schematics and P&IDs
  • Demonstrated experience in bid and project management under tight deadlines
  • Site surveying skills across commercial and domestic buildings, including plantrooms
  • Proficient in AutoCAD; knowledge of Revit is desirable
  • Strong written and verbal communication, especially in technical reporting
