Duties And Responsibilities
The Mechanical Design Engineer will be involved in the development and design of an array of mechanical systems focused primarily on new product development activities within the Development Engineering team. The position will have responsibility to design and create 2D and 3D mechanical CAD models consisting of custom designed sheet metal and plastic parts as well as various other manufactured and commercial mechanical and electrical components. The Mechanical Design Engineer will work closely with other engineers, group support staff, and suppliers to transform ideas and concepts into high volume products via working prototypes, SolidWorks models, and detailed part and assembly drawings in fast-paced concept-to-production cycles.
- Create and improve upon designs from physical mock-ups and to validate designs by building, measuring, and testing prototypes.
- Identify and recommend methods to reduce total product cost, increase product reliability, and reduce product lead times while maintaining or improving product performance.
- Assist in the creation and definition of objectives for each specific project.
- Create and update models or drawings to initial state for initial prototype or initial release.
- Update existing models and drawings per Engineering Change Notices (ECNs).
- Develop, release, and update Bills of Materials.
- Work with suppliers and external consultants regarding technical requirements and sourcing needs for identified projects.
- Lead and/or participate in design reviews to ensure sound mechanical design of products.
- Coordinate with Packaging suppliers to obtain packaging for new products.
- Other tasks and responsibilities based on business needs.
Knowledge & Experience
Work experience
- Minimum of 3 years in a design engineering role where progressive responsibility was attained and executional success accomplished.
- Familiarity with Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) and for serviceability.
- Able to analyze part tolerance stack-ups to ensure manufacturability and accuracy of assemblies.
Job specific attributes/skills
- Proficient in the use of current versions of SolidWorks and EPDM (or equivalent CAD software), including the ability to generate 3D CAD designs of products at the sub-system level as well as integrating sub-system designs into system level architecture with appropriate degree of engineering analysis to verify designs.
- Proficiency in creating, modifying, maintaining and interpreting models, assemblies and detail part drawings using GD&T or comparable engineering standards.
- Excellent problem-solving skills ranging from hands-on investigation to engineering analysis.
- Good oral and written communication skills, including ability to lead design reviews and assist in preparation of product and process documentation.
- Skilled in the use of Microsoft Excel for data gathering, analysis, and reporting and in the use of other Microsoft Office products.
- Effective multitasking and personal time management skills.
- A positive “get the job done” attitude is expected. The ability to jump in and get to work with minimal direction and supervision will be of significant benefit.
Preferred Qualifications (if Applicable)
- Experience designing plastic parts for injection molding, vacuum forming, extrusion, etc., including the ability to assist in the selection of appropriate materials.
- Experience designing metal parts for sheet metal stamping and forming, machining, welding, etc.
- Understanding of component packaging for the optimization of designs with very limited working volumes.
- Familiarity with the selection, application and integration of low cost sensors.
- Familiarity with electrical and electronic systems and ability to work closely with electrical engineers.
Work location: This position is based out of our Mason, Ohio headquarters. We work together in the office Tuesday through Thursday and enjoy flexibility to work remotely Monday and Friday as schedules permit.
