Job Title: Materials Test Technician
Location: Madison Heights, MI
Position Summary
The Materials Test Technician supports testing activities and equipment maintenance within a laboratory environment. The role involves preparing samples, performing a variety of material, flammability, and environmental tests, and ensuring the reliability and accuracy of data collection. The technician will also assist with routine operations, documentation, and shipping activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare test samples and perform materials, flammability, and environmental testing with a strong emphasis on accuracy and reliability.
- Operate laboratory test equipment, instruments, and machinery safely and appropriately.
- Record and report accurate test data in accordance with internal procedures and quality standards.
- Interpret and follow ASTM and ISO test methods (preferred, not mandatory).
- Participate in training for day-to-day lab functions and corporate initiatives.
- Maintain laboratory records and documentation related to test procedures and results.
- Assist with routine shipping, equipment maintenance, and inventory as needed.
- Adhere to the Applus+ Corporate Code of Ethics and all applicable corporate and local policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in a science or engineering field; or relevant experience in a laboratory testing environment.
- 0–2 years of experience in materials, flammability, or environmental testing (automotive experience preferred but not required).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Familiarity with ASTM and ISO material test methods preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Project).
- Ability to understand and interpret test specifications and procedures.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness to work on-site at the Madison Heights, MI facility; no travel required.
Physical & Mental Requirements
- Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk, and hear.
- Ability to lift and move test equipment or samples as needed.
- Capable of reading and interpreting technical documents, safety rules, and procedure manuals.
- Able to write reports and communicate effectively with colleagues and customers.
- Comfortable performing basic math, geometry, and data analysis tasks.
Work Environment
Moderate noise level with occasional exposure to regulated materials. Standard lab environment with proper safety equipment and protocols.
