Engineer I

Performs advanced engineering design work. Responsible for providing engineering services in support of the state's ferry

operations. Work involves providing engineering guidance as it relates to coastal erosion and restoration, hydrologic & hydraulic

(H&H) engineering, maritime structural engineering, dredging engineering, and geotechnical engineering. Ensures compliance with

applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental

officials and private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self- supervising and assume direct accountability for the

work product.

Engineer II

Performs highly advanced engineering design work. Responsible for providing engineering services in support of the state's ferry

operations. Work involves providing engineering guidance as it relates to coastal erosion and restoration, hydrologic & hydraulic

(H&H) engineering, maritime structural engineering, dredging engineering, and geotechnical engineering. Ensures compliance with

applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Serves as Project lead and may serve as a Lead

Worker. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level are virtually selfsupervising

and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties:

Engineer I

• May lead project or planning activities of professional and technical employees or consultants.
• Stays abreast of transportation industry changes and requirements, policies, procedures and legislation.
• Uses department's enterprise Critical Path Method (CPM) schedule and resource management tool to accomplish scheduling and resource management of transportation projects.
• Utilizes project management principles in initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling and closing for highly complex transportation projects.
• Assists with inspections of maritime structures.
• Evaluates construction, operation, maintenance and environmental projects involving the GIWW.
• Assists in evaluating Corps of Engineers proposed engineering and environmental activities relating to construction operations and maintenance of the GIWW ( Gulf Intracoastal Waterway).
• Performs complex engineering design work for maritime structures such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
• Provides construction oversight and conducts final inspections on completed projects, develop contract scopes and provides PS & E reviews.
• Acts in advisory capacity on administrative, technical, regulatory and engineering aspects of transportation.
  
  

Engineer II

• Coordinates and evaluates construction, operation, maintenance and environmental projects involving the GIWW.
• Evaluates and coordinates Corps of Engineers proposed engineering and environmental activities relating to construction operations and maintenance of the GIWW.
• Coordinates and assists with inspections of maritime structures.
• Reports and makes recommendations regarding transportation industry changes and requirements, policies, procedures and legislation.
• Leads project or planning activities of professional or technical employees or consultants.
• Performs highly advanced and complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in in civil or coastal engineering or related bachelors or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience:

Engineer I

2 years of experience in civil, coastal or related engineering experience as licensed professional engineer. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Engineer II

5 years of experience in civil, coastal or related engineering experience as licensed professional engineer. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Licenses and Certifications:

• Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Engineer I/II

• Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
• Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools

• Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
• Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
