Education Week, a nonprofit media organization that provides the most trusted news on K-12 American education, is seeking a Managing Editor to join our Editorial team.

Job Summary 

The Managing Editor (ME) is a senior newsroom leader and experienced journalist who helps develop and execute on company strategy to expand our audience, deepen connections with new and loyal readers, and grow our business through exemplary and innovative journalism. Guided by and reporting to the Editor-in-Chief, the Managing Editor manages a team of Assistant Managing Editors (AMEs) and oversees the daily news operation, ensuring Education Week provides our audiences with excellent news, analytical and informational content across all channels. The ME will help ensure that our news coverage is impactful and highly relevant to the K-12 professional education community. The ME also will ensure that editors and reporters provide balanced and judicious coverage and will edit content with depth and precision.

This full-time hybrid position is based in Education Week's Bethesda, MD, office in the Washington DC metro area. At EdWeek our people and relationships are at the heart of everything we do. We believe that in-person work is essential to our culture, collaboration and professional development. That is why we operate on a hybrid model, with the expectation that team members will be in the office during the current policy of the assigned two days per week. This role is designed for those who thrive in a dynamic, collaborative environment and is not intended for remote or virtual work. The position is aligned to the Bethesda, MD office and the candidate must live in the locality.  The annual starting salary range is $129,600.00 - $170,000.00.



Key Responsibilities 

  • Work in concert with the Editor-in-Chief to execute on the organization’s strategic goals, supporting and modeling those priorities in the newsroom 
  • Ensure content meets the highest ethical and professional standards of journalism, editing copy when needed for accuracy, substance, style, and quality
  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of K-12 education issues and trends by reviewing relevant news and information sources, attendance at appropriate conferences, and discussions with reporters and colleagues    
  • Lead newsroom efforts to understand the news and information needs of our key audience groups through analytics and other forms of interaction 
  • Oversee coverage priorities in assigned areas of responsibility, including teaching and the teaching profession, politics and policy impacting K-12 education, education technology and more
  • Has a deep understanding of the importance of the significant role visuals play in EdWeek coverage and work across the company, including visually lead stories and social and social-first content
  • Lead daily news meeting and set coverage agenda in coordination with editor teams and visuals team leadership 
  • Manage the Assistant Managing Editors for Education Week, providing editorial guidance and strategic direction, as developed with the Editor-in-Chief, and professional development opportunities 
  • Recruit, interview, and hire candidates for open positions in partnership with the Editor-in-Chief and other staff members (as needed) 
  • Recommend and implement staffing changes in alignment with organization-wide priorities, and work with the Human Resources team to maintain current position descriptions and career path planning for newsroom editors and reporters

Qualifications And Skills 

  • 7+ years of experience in a news, media, information, or education media organization
  • Strong collaborator, problem-solver, and negotiator, with experience leading and helping build strong partnerships across teams and demonstrated interest in the revenue goals of an organization
  • Can seamlessly balance focus on big picture strategy and tactical details
  • Excellent supervisory skills, including the ability to coach staff and prioritize their work when required, and demonstrated people management skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a fast-paced environment
  • High level of initiative, critical thinking, attention to detail, sound judgement, ethics, integrity, professionalism, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including traveling when needed, as required to meet the organization's needs
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness
