Summary

Manages and coordinates activities of assigned employees in the Phlebotomy department. Provides management expertise and direction to staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Develops and maintains department policies and procedures according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines to ensure pre-analytic quality and integrity of specimens.
  • Provides expertise, continuing education, mentoring, coaching and training directly to management staff along with added support to front line colleagues within the Phlebotomy team to maintain a client/patient-focused attitude and culture of service excellence.
  • Performs ongoing departmental monitoring to improve quality, work flow, staff productivity and employee satisfaction as well as prepares and/or directs preparation of various qualitative and quantitative reports/ records for the purpose of metrics reporting and quality control.
  • Actively participates in organizational quality programs and ensures prompt responses to problems and complaints.
  • Fosters a culture of collegiality and effectively communicates with other functional areas and across all levels of management and staff.
  • Prepares and administers department budget and acts as a key contributor when providing input and recommendations to the director for the purchase of capital equipment.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform all duties and responsibilities of those supervised.
  • Actively participates in the continuing education programs; reviews current literature, participates in meetings and attends seminars to keep informed of new developments within the field as well as cascades new information to direct reports.

Education/Experience

Associate degree from an accredited institution or 10 years of experience or a combination of education and experience. Previous phlebotomy and management experience required.

Language Ability

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.

Math Ability

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of MS Word processing software; Excel spreadsheet software; Lawson data entry for Human Resource systems and Sunquest and/or Co-Path laboratory software.

Certificates And Licenses

Certification by a recognized certifying agency for Clinical Laboratory Professionals preferred (ASCP, ASMT, NCA, etc.). A new hire without certification will have one year from the time of hire in new role to obtain certification.
