Job Summary
The
Manager, Application Engineering leads a team of engineers responsible for assisting the Vertiv sales force with proper application of Vertiv thermal management products. This role combines technical expertise with thoughtful leadership to enable professional growth within the team and business process improvements. The manager works closely with cross-functional teams including sales, product management, SFA product engineering, and sales operations. The ideal candidate possesses deep understanding of HVAC equipment, strong leaderships skills, and passion for developing early career engineers.
This role serves as a conduit between the field and national sales team members and internal departments such as engineering, offering management, etc. to develop and recommend products and services to meet customers’ requirements. Technical support includes but is not limited to assistance with performance calculation tools, application guidance, processing special feature authorizations (SFA) quote and order reviews, processing change orders, and providing technical input into bid proposals, projects, and technical documents within the sales process. As a senior member of the applications engineering team, this role not only mentors other team members, but will take the lead on projects and the resolution of complex issues.
Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of application engineers to provide responsive and accurate technical support to Vertiv’s sales team across US, Canada, and select global areas. Typical technical support involves the following activities
- Providing guidance on correct application of units for optimal operation or acceptable operation in non-optimal situations.
- Perform equipment selections and technical calculations to meet requirements for individual components and complete liquid cooling systems.
- Address questions on control for individual components and complete cooling systems.
- Assist in correct application and processing of special feature authorization (SFA) equipment quotations
- Apply Quote Configurator tool to provide quoting support when sales team members require assistance.
- Provide CDE compliance support for project bid teams or local offices as needed
- Review project specifications, drawings, and RFP documents to offer guidance on optimal product proposals
- Lead coordination with internal teams such as engineering, SFA engineering, technical sales, and sales teams to address barrier in opportunities to orders process
- Lead ongoing growth of application engineering team through targeted training, educational travel, and development of soft skills
- Develop team tools to understand and improve team performance in supporting Vertiv sales team
- Provide monthly updates on team performance
- Help develop and document best practices and continuous improvement initiatives for the department.
- Develop and manage to goals aligned overall thermal tech sales goals and strategies
Minimum Qualifications Required
- Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, business, or related technical field. Mechanical Engineering preferred.
- 8+ years relevant experience in data center engineering Experience in technical scope review and formal proposal development.
- Experience leading and developing others.
- Experience in advanced HVAC controls and BMS protocols.
- Deep technical understanding of data center facilities and infrastructure including power, HVAC, structured cabling, rack management and security/compliance.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Detail-oriented and responsive work.
- Ability to work and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to read, interpret, modify, and create schematics and one-line diagrams
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate and work successfully amongst various levels of the organization.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Preferred:
- Knowledge of ASHRAE, Data Center guidelines and Up time Institute regulations and best practices.
- Working knowledge of liquid cooling components and liquid cooling system implementation
