Job Summary This position is responsible for maintaining and repairing tools, equipment, and machines. Primary Activities and Responsibilities Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Inspect tools, equipment, and roadway machines. Troubleshoot malfunctions. Perform maintenance and repair. Work with tools, machines, vehicles, and equipment. Plan, organize, and track information. Communicate with others orally or in writing. Direct the work of others. Work with information in print or on a computer. Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures. Organize and maintain Maintenance of Way Shop in a clean and orderly manner. Establish and maintain an inventory of parts and tools. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High School diploma /GED 21 years of age or older Valid Driver's License Able to read, write and communicate in English. Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Possess a journeyman's card or provide documentation to verify 4 years of experience as a diesel mechanic or gas automotive/heavy equipment mechanic Ability to use both high precision (for example, calipers, electronic scales) and low precision (for example, tape measures, hand levels) instruments to get accurate measurements. Ability to read and understand schematic drawings of electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems. Preferred Qualifications Experience with large motor generators, high-voltage circuitry, electronics and/or electro-mechanical systems. Experience with 6700 Jackson Pandrol Tamper and Railroad specific roadway machines. Hi-rail qualified (must become qualified within 4 months of starting position) Basic Competencies Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications-both general and technical) Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions) Reasoning skills (problem solving and troubleshooting skills) Mechanical aptitude Computer and basic keyboarding skills Physical Requirements Heavy work, lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling between 50 to 150 pounds Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection. Stooping/bending/kneeling/crouch/balancing/climbing/standing/sitting Walking on uneven surfaces Exposure to equipment that intensifies the heat factor Environmental Conditions Work outside in all weather conditions, on uneven surfaces, around loud noise and fumes, in confined spaces and on occasion at elevated heights. Shifts/Hours Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work. Training Company paid on the job training (which may require travel) provided. Pay Rate Full Rate - $39.44/hour Probationary Period 45 Days Union Membership This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement, union membership and monthly dues are required.
