Teaching Responsibilities
* Plan and deliver high-quality music and performing arts instruction for students in grades K-8
* Teach general music including rhythm, melody, harmony, music theory, and appreciation
* Incorporate drama, movement, and performance into the curriculum to foster creative expression and stage presence
* Direct major school performances such as the Christmas Show, Grandparents Day, and other theatrical events
* Lead and rehearse the school choir for weekly Masses, holy days, and school liturgies
* Select sacred music appropriate to the liturgical calendar and collaborate with clergy and liturgy teams
* Foster spiritual growth through music that reflects Catholic values and traditions
* Manage technical needs for performances, including lighting, sound, and stage logistics
* Collaborate with faculty on interdisciplinary projects that incorporate music and the arts
* Assess and provide constructive feedback on student progress in both music and performance
* Attend staff meetings, parent conferences, and diocesan professional development sessions
Administrative/Other Responsibilities
* Maintain a clean and organized classroom environment
* Communicate regularly and respectfully with parents and colleagues
* Return phone calls and emails in a timely and professional manner
* Supervise students during recess and other assigned duties
* Demonstrate confidentiality, professionalism, and alignment with Catholic school values
* Other responsibilities as assigned by the administration
Requirements
Religious Qualifications
* Active, practicing Roman Catholic (preferred)
* Basic Catechetical Certification (preferred, or earned within two years of employment)
* Respects and understands a Catholic school philosophy
Professional Qualifications
* Bachelor's Degree required; degree in Music, Performing Arts, or Music Education preferred
* Valid California teaching credential in Music or Performing Arts (preferred)
* Proficiency in piano/keyboard and at least one classroom or performance instrument
* Experience in K-8 music and drama education, including directing children's theater or musicals
* Knowledge of Catholic liturgy and sacred music; experience leading music at Mass is a plus
* Strong communication and classroom management skills
* Clear Livescan background check through the Diocese of San Diego
* Positive professional references
Physical Requirements
To successfully meet the needs of the students in his/her care, the teacher must:
* Spend the majority of the day standing in the classroom. While standing the teacher will frequently hold objects they are working with or demonstrating
* Sit on an occasional basis when developing lesson plans, grading, etc.
* Walk through the classroom and be able to maneuver in tight spaces between desks. Walk on both even and uneven surfaces
* Deal with students while kneeling or squatting, stooping, or bending
* Reach at, below, or above shoulder height with the dominant upper extremity; may require trunk or neck rotation to look back at the class
* Assist in moving children's desks and chairs to change the layout of the classroom to influence the learning situation. It is occasionally necessary to lift and carry boxes weighing up to 25 pounds from the office to classrooms
While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to be inside the classroom. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the classroom and preschool environment, as well as maneuver throughout the school facility to attend meetings, trainings, and other work-related events. The employee may be required to conduct trips to, from, and within various city and countywide locations to attend trainings or workshops.
