Job Summary

We are seeking currently enrolled secondary education students to participate in our internship program. With support and guidance, the Intern will support the department in a variety of tasks. Such tasks may include assisting with proposal generation, general office tasks, field surveys, report preparation, helping to create and edit specifications and drawings, and assisting with invoice development. What You’ll Do

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed in this position. They are not intended to prescribe or restrict the assignments that management may make.

  • Assist with specific aspects of project development, focused including but not limited to Architectural Design/New Construction Projects, Modernization Projects, Forensic Engineering Investigations, and more!
  • Support Project Managers with scheduling active projects to ensure client satisfaction, timely billing, and collecting for all active projects.
  • Observe and assist with field surveys in existing buildings and new construction projects.
  • Gather and maintain specified records of technical data , such as field report notes completed by other team members, and assemble them into a report format.
  • Provide field support to Consultants and Project Managers.
  • Gain exposure in analyzing processes and products in comparison to our designed drawings and specifications.
  • Learn to manage time effectively.
  • Produce an initial draft of the work product, including survey reports.
  • Learn to build and maintain relationships with clients, (internal and external), including effective communication skills.
  • Perform necessary administrative tasks.
  • Participate in reviewing learning modules.
  • May produce a capstone presentation to discuss experience and learning as an Intern.

What You’ll Bring

  • High School Diploma/Equivalent
  • Current enrollment in a technical Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree program such as engineering, construction management, architecture, or related field required; must complete sophomore year prior to internship start date
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience in Bluebeam and AutoCAD preferred
  • Technical competency and an ability to effectively communicate and build rapport with co-workers
  • A practical understanding of building structures
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Critical thinking skills, an innovative mindset, strong attention to detail, and a willingness to learn.
  • An ability to work both independently and collaboratively across the organization and be exposed to a variety of projects and processes
  • A high level of professionalism, flexibility and an ability to adapt in a changing, fast-paced environment working with internal coworkers
  • Professional verbal and written communication skills with all levels of the organization
  • Previous internship or work history in construction, engineering, or architectural firms (preferred)

Working Environment

This role involves both physical and mental demands and may be performed in various settings, including offices, construction sites, and confined spaces like elevator pits. Tasks often require frequent movement in multiple directions. Lerch Bates will provide reasonable accommodations upon request through Human Resources.

Physical Demands

This role requires regular sitting, talking, and hearing in meetings and by phone. Employees must navigate tight spaces, climb ladders, move around construction sites, take measurements, and travel by car, air, or rail. Duties may involve working at heights and in confined spaces, using hands for tasks like typing and operating elevator components, and applying up to 30 lbs. of force. Close visual attention is also required.

Mental Demands

This position requires strong written and verbal communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Employees must interpret complex information, apply mathematical and logical reasoning, quickly learn new skills, and manage detailed, multitask workloads under shifting deadlines. Regular interaction with executives, colleagues, clients, and external stakeholders is also expected.
