Description

Do Great Things! Durham Technical Community College is hiring an Instructor of Electronics Engineering Technology and Biomedical Equipment Technology. In general, the work of the Instructor, Electronics Engineering Technology, and Biomedical Equipment Technology includes performing general office duties, requiring the ability to sit and /or stand for long periods of time. Work outside of the office setting is expected, and visits to other campus locations could be required.

Examples of Duties

General Operations

  • Teach Electronics Engineering Technology and Biomedical Equipment Technology courses as determined by the terms of the employment contract, the director's semester staffing plans, program-specific needs, the general needs of the college, and the current teaching load guidelines.
  • Provide quality instruction, teach classes for the entire class period, and adequately cover course materials and competencies specified in course outlines.
  • Must complete all mandatory work related and professional development training.

Additional duties include:

  • Preparing objectives, assignments, grading standards, attendance policies, and course syllabi to be distributed at first class meetings.
  • Providing supervisor with syllabi, objectives, and course outlines for each class.
  • Being well prepared for each class.
  • Keeping accurate attendance and grade records.
  • Turning in reports, final grades, and other forms on time.
  • Using various and innovative teaching techniques where applicable.
  • Returning homework assignments and exams on a timely basis.
  • Revising course content and objectives as required.
  • Making suggestions to supervisor regarding textbooks, software, instructional materials, supplies, and/or equipment needs.
  • Provide academic advisement during early and general registration for students taking courses in the programs as determined and assigned by the program director and/or the department head. Duties include:
  • Maintaining scheduled office and student advising hours.
  • Being available during non-scheduled hours by appointment.
  • Advising new and special students as requested.
  • Counseling students in academic and employment planning.
  • Attending advisement workshops as requested.
  • Keeping up-to-date records for each advisee.
  • Maintain professional awareness and currency of important technology, incorporating this material into instruction in a manner consistent with course outlines and the plan of study.
  • Use various instructional, computer, and distance learning technologies to provide a contemporary presentation of course material where appropriate.

Teach assigned courses with special attention to the college's mission, its commitment to the open-door philosophy, and student success.

Program Responsibilities

  • As requested, assist the Director in planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating the programs' institutional effectiveness objectives.
  • Implement and enforce, when appropriate, college academic policies and procedures together with administrative rules and regulations and other controls intended to maintain order and the highest standards of instruction.
  • Maintain effective communications with the Director and other program faculty by attending regular meetings, timely written communications, and other means as requested.
  • Work productively as a team with colleagues.
  • Maintain a 40-hour weekly work schedule designed to ensure the completion of all teaching, advisement, and college responsibilities.
  • Maintain and process all office records, grade and enrollment reports, forms, schedules, and other paperwork in a timely and efficient manner, checking for the correctness and accuracy of all data.
  • Assist the Director in reviewing and evaluating the programs, as requested.
  • Assist in the development of courses and syllabi for electronics and biomedical courses as requested.
  • Assist the Director in ensuring that the programs are in full compliance with any requirements for accreditation, certification, and other standards stipulated by external agencies.
  • Assist the Director in preparing a semester or annual master schedule of course offerings and class schedules that meet the programs' requirements and the needs of students, ensuring that the instructional resources of the college are effectively utilized.
  • Make recommendations to the Director concerning programs need for full-time and part-time personnel.
  • Instructional Management and Supervision:
  • Utilize effective instructional technology to deliver curricular content in non-traditional
  • formats and to supplement the delivery of content through traditional means;

Other Duties:

Maintain a teaching load as established by the college within the range of 15-18 credit hours or 18 to 21 contact hours per semester, given the position;

Maintain effective, collaborative, and productive relations at all times with all other departmental programs, the division, and the college.

Maintain effective and productive relations with IT-related businesses and organizations for the purpose of keeping program courses current.

Participate in professional organizations; attend conferences and workshops as appropriate and as funding allows.

Serve on college committees as assigned.

Attend graduation ceremonies.

Collaborate with and provide appropriate support to Student Support Services personnel in conducting student advising and registration, new student orientations, job placement, recruitment, and other related activities.

Attend department, division, and college meetings, as requested.

Represent the programs, the department, the division, or the college in institutional assignments, professional activities, and uphold such involvement among program members;

Provide support and assistance in conducting student recruitment and registration, determining admission requirements and procedures, the orientation of new students, job placement of graduates, and other related activities as needed; and,

Assume other appropriate responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned by the Director, Assistant Dean, Dean, Vice President, and/or the President in meeting the needs of the college.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or a related field.

Work Experience

Two years of applicable teaching/training experience in industry, secondary, or post-secondary settings.

Preferred Qualifications

Teaching experience preferred.

Supplemental Information

  • Excellent understanding of the recent and future trends in the Electronics Engineering Technology and the Biomedical Equipment Technology professions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant disciplines, including DC/AC circuit analysis, digital electronics, communications systems, linear IC applications, computer repair, and software applications for electronics;
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant disciplines, including biomedical measurements and biomedical instrumentation;
  • Excellent understanding of the concepts of healthcare delivery systems, hospital organization and structure.
  • Ability to utilize current instructional technology;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the educational needs of the Durham Technical Community College service area;
  • Ability to establish, maintain, and promote effective communication and interpersonal relations across departmental lines, with associates, as well as with the business community, the higher education community, and the general public;
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to the needs and expectations of students, faculty, staff and advisory or community groups;
  • Understanding of the mission, goals, and objectives of a community college;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the commitment to the mission and philosophy of the North Carolina Community College System;
  • Demonstrated competence in oral, written, and computer skills appropriate to the position of director/instructor;
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and effective oral and written communication/public relation skills;
  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines;

Required Working Hours

A minimum of a 40-hour work week for 9 months as determined with the supervisor to allow the employee to fulfill the assigned duties and responsibilities, including occasional evening and weekend hours. evening and weekend hours.
