About The Position
At Vermont Gas Systems (VGS), we do important work. We deliver safe, reliable, and affordable thermal energy services to over 55,000 Vermonters in Chittenden, Franklin, and Addison counties. A Meter Reader, Initial is a member of the Billing Team that travels to customer locations to collect meter usage information that flows into our billing system. They apply their attention to detail skills to ensure accuracy of meter data and conducts meter investigations when needed. They are technology proficient and can navigate a smartphone, tablet, and meter reader equipment. They work under general supervision of experienced Meter Readers and Supervisor.
Duties And Responsibilities For This Position
- Becomes familiar with Vermont Gas Systems (VGS) policies, procedures, paperwork, safety rules and follows safe working practices and compliance procedures.
- Accurately reads customer meters using a tablet or technology device.
- Learns basic duties for uploading and downloading meter data to and from VGS’s billing system.
- Learns to identify unusual conditions such as gas odors, abnormal consumption, hazardous meter installations or damage. Takes initiative to report any observed conditions that seem unsafe or unusual.
- Learns routine maintenance of meter reading equipment.
- Works with other team members to resolve billing and meter reading issues. Investigates meter concerns upon request. Meter concerns or issues can consist of zero usage, broken ERT’s and high bill complaints.
- Assists other departments, as required, to complete read overs, turn-offs, tenant letters, and other assignments.
- Responsible for staying up to date with new product and service information offered by VGS.
- Prepares all necessary paperwork, electronically with an attention to detail and accuracy.
- Attends all required trainings, such as safety, compliance and monthly team meetings.
- Works towards appropriate Operator Qualifications.
- Works towards obtaining Natural Gas Certification.
- Other duties as requested.
Required Skills For This Role
- Able to operate a motor vehicle, holds an unrestricted, valid motor vehicle license and must maintain a satisfactory driving record.
- Able to successfully navigate various technologies such as tablets and smartphones as well
as applicable software to complete job duties.
- Capable of following specific instructions to maintain data integrity, accuracy, and safety.
- Able to troubleshoot issues and resolve problems successfully.
- Collaborates effectively with others to accomplish goals.
- Possesses experience working with customers or the public.
- Able to meet deadlines and complete assignments within a timely manner.
- Conducts job duties with integrity and honesty.
- Able to manipulate tools and lift/push/pull heavy objects. Also, maintain any required
training for such tools.
- Knowledge of basic hand tools.
- Able to learn VGS service territory and use a GPS system.
- Strong attention to detail.
- These skills are normally acquired with a High School Diploma and/or Trade School
Certification.
Physical Demands & Work Conditions
- This position is Safety Sensitive and subject to appropriate drug and alcohol testing as
prescribed by the Federal Register 49 CFR-Section 199.
- Must be able to sustain awkward positions of kneeling, lying, reaching overhead and
squatting to perform duties.
- Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions for extended periods.
- Must be able to lift and handle loads up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
- Frequently required to kneel, stand, squat, bend, lie, twist, climb, reach (above shoulders)
and drive.
- May have to work on uneven ground.
- Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required for specific job duties.
