Job Title: Project Manager/ Estimator – Coatings Division

Department: Industrial Coatings

FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Description:

The Coatings Project Manager/Estimator oversees industrial coatings projects from estimation through execution and closeout. This role requires deep knowledge of surface preparation, coating systems, and application techniques. The successful candidate will manage field teams, subcontractors, budgets, schedules, and customer relationships, ensuring work is performed safely, efficiently, and to quality standards.


Essential Job Functions may include the following or other duties as assigned:

Project Oversight

·        Manage daily operations of coatings projects, including planning, execution, and closeout.

·        Coordinate field crews, subcontractors, materials, and equipment across multiple job sites.

·        Ensure projects meet customer specifications, schedule milestones, and budget expectations.

·        Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, inspectors, and vendors during project execution.

Estimating & Planning

·        Review plans, specifications, and site conditions to develop accurate cost estimates for labor, materials, and equipment.

·        Prepare and submit bid proposals and change orders.

·        Plan surface preparation methods (e.g., abrasive blasting, pressure washing) and coating applications based on substrate, environment, and technical requirements.

Safety & Compliance

·        Promote and enforce strict safety protocols in accordance with OSHA and company policies.

·        Conduct regular jobsite inspections, safety audits, and toolbox talks.

·        Address any incidents or near-misses promptly and thoroughly.

Quality Control

·        Ensure all work complies with applicable specifications (e.g., SSPC, NACE) and client requirements.

·        Oversee coating thickness measurements, surface cleanliness tests, and other quality verification processes.

·        Coordinate with QA/QC inspectors and document all quality control results.

Budget & Cost Management

·        Track project costs and maintain profitability through proactive resource planning.

·        Manage subcontractor invoicing, material purchases, and labor utilization.

·        Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising safety or quality.

Documentation & Reporting

·        Maintain accurate records of project progress, costs, material usage, and labor hours.

·        Submit daily reports and updates to management and clients.

·        Ensure timely and thorough project closeout documentation.

Requirements/Qualifications

·        Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Industrial Coatings, or related field preferred.

·        Minimum of 5 years of experience in coatings project management or industrial painting.

·        In-depth understanding of coatings systems (e.g., epoxies, polyurethanes, zinc-rich primers).

·        Familiarity with surface prep standards (e.g., SSPC-SP10, SP6) and inspection criteria.

·        Strong estimating skills and experience with coating takeoffs and spec interpretation.

·        Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.

·        Proficient in project management software and basic office applications.

·        Certifications such as NACE Level I/II or SSPC QP/PCI preferred.

Work Environment

This role requires frequent travel to job sites and occasional overnight stays. The position involves a mix of field supervision and office-based planning and coordination.
