Additional Information

In Communication and Engagement Services, the graphic designer provides expertise in traditional and digital graphic design in the planning, creation and production of print, digital, video, photography, social media, signage and livery projects.

Reporting to the senior manager, communications, the graphic designer executes projects from design to completion, ensuring the work is high quality, accurate and delivered on time and on budget. The graphic designer is accountable for designing and producing finished artwork including, but not limited to, brochures, posters, presentations and multi-media materials, as well as supporting the creation of system, service unit and school photography and videos.

The graphic designer must have the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting client expectations, budgets and timelines, and is also responsible for keeping a database of completed projects, maintaining consistent CBE brand identity and performing other related responsibilities as assigned.


Position Description

Purpose

Reporting to the senior manager, communications, the graphic designer provides expertise in traditional and digital graphic design in the planning, creation and production of print-based, digital, video, photography, social media, signage and livery. This job works closely with the design coordinator, other managers and members of the Communication and Engagement Services (CES) team to ensure materials are high quality, accurate and follow CBE’s Visual Identity Standards.

Success requires:

  • delivering consistent, high quality print, digital, videography and photography materials that adhere to the CBE’s visual identity standards;
  • working with the communication team and clients on optimal design approach given timing and budget;
  • managing individual projects from concept to completion;
  • managing the approval process with clients and internal team members and handling all production details;
  • working efficiently to manage a high volume of output;
  • finding opportunities to maximize impact while reducing costs, and
  • keeping the client and other members of the team informed of the project status to ensure client needs are met.


Accountability

Every communication is an opportunity to increase public confidence in the CBE. This job connects the day-to-day communication initiatives to what the CBE aims to achieve through its Education Plan. The role is accountable for:

  • executing projects from design to completion including collaborating with other members of the creative team, clients and/or external partners and ensuring the work is high quality, accurate and delivered on time and on budget;
  • collaborating and providing advice to other graphic and web designers regarding the creative process and creative product;
  • maintaining strong working relationships with clients, other members of the CES team and external partners to ensure the overall impact of the campaign is greater than the sum of the individual parts—always mindful of an integrated brand;
  • providing internal clients and external partners with information/ recommendations on brand standards as required;
  • designing and producing finished artwork including, but not limited to, brochures, posters, presentations and multi-media materials
  • supporting the media production specialist in the creation of system, service unit and school videos;
  • supporting select photography requests from the organization;
  • keeping clients/managers informed of progress, budget, timelines;
  • keeping the design coordinator and manager apprised of the status of projects and initiatives; client, stakeholder or employee issues; and opportunities for budget savings and continuous improvement;
  • handling and escalating creative issues and approvals appropriately;
  • maintaining the confidentiality of information and adhering to policy, regulatory and legislative requirements (including the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act); and
  • modelling exceptional personal communication.


Major responsibilities

Under the direction of the senior manager, communications, the graphic designer will:

  • conceptualize, design and produce finished artwork and materials for print-based or electronic materials, displays and multimedia resources;
  • support the development and completion of videography and photography resources;
  • discuss concept and design approach with members of CES and clients;
  • proofread the text of finished work;
  • ensure visual identity standards are applied consistently;
  • manage the production and fulfilment of the print and online pieces including working with external partners to determine stock, bindings, inks and printing techniques and obtains quotes for work;
  • provide client with quotes and production recommendations;
  • make recommendations on the design aspects of web and multimedia resources;
  • serve as a resource on graphic design, multimedia projects and related applications to CBE employees and schools;
  • work with the design coordinator and other CES team members to help present and explain creative/marketing solutions to internal clients;
  • provide recommendations on how to evolve/refresh the visual identity standards;
  • add completed projects to the project database and the archival backup of all creative projects for the CBE;
  • maintain the photo database, ensuring photos used for all creative projects are properly archived and searchable by others;
  • provide updates to the visual identity standards document as required;
  • maintain consistent CBE brand identity by providing internal business partners with information/recommendations on brand standards as required; and
  • perform other related responsibilities as assigned to meet the purpose and accountabilities of the role.


Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • a post-secondary diploma at an accredited art school, college or university with emphasis on graphic design/visual communication
  • minimum of three years of experience in all of the following: graphic design, multi-media, web publishing, end-to-end video production and photography understanding of brand management and trends in the world of graphic design
  • experience on both the client and agency sides is an asset
  • proficiency with MAC and PC computer systems and related multimedia, web design and video/photography production software.
  • experience in project management and client consultation an equivalent combination of directly related education and directly related experience may be considered.
