Michael Baker International is seeking a visionary and experienced Geotechnical Engineering Department Manager to lead and grow our geotechnical engineering practice. Based in our Pittsburgh (Moon Township), PA headquarters, this in-office leadership role combines strategic direction, technical excellence, and operational oversight.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing department operations, ensuring high-quality project delivery, and driving business development. Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the geotechnical engineering team in project execution, including scope, schedule, budget, and quality control.
- Providing technical oversight, QA/QC leadership, and mentoring to staff.
- Coordinating staffing, project priorities, and resource allocation.
- Managing departmental budgets and contributing to office-wide financial planning.
- Overseeing project management activities such as research, design, reporting, and client coordination.
- Preparing proposals, managing client relationships, and supporting marketing efforts.
- Ensuring compliance with company processes including the Michael Baker Way and project performance methodologies.
- Recruiting, developing, and retaining top talent within the department.
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field (Master’s preferred)
- Pennsylvania Professional Engineer (PE) license required or ability to obtain within 6 months.
- Minimum 12 years of geotechnical engineering experience.
- At least 5 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
- Demonstrated success in managing geotechnical projects and teams.
- Experience in geotechnical investigations, construction, and design, including earthwork, foundations, retaining walls, dams, and excavation support
- Strong leadership and team development capabilities, as well as proven business development skills and relationship management.
COMPENSATION:
The approximate compensation range for this position is $120,000- $190,000 per year. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
