Job Description

Position Purpose summary:

The Food Security Community Service Worker supports existing food related programs at Boundless Vancouver through effective assistance in managing all resources in the dietary envelope and assists in receiving and transport of other non-food donations. He/she will assist with food pick-ups, volunteer management, sorting, prep, redistribution and clean up as well as safe unloading and sorting of non-food donations. He/she will also integrate the use of technology to keep inventory of our donations. 

The Food Security Community Service Worker is required to perform their duties in a manner consistent with The Salvation Army Boundless Vancouver’s core values, ensure neighbour safety, and demonstrate customer service excellence. The job requires responsible for planning, implementation and evaluation of the program and services provided to our neighbours. He/she is highly organized, an effective multi-tasker, and a go-getter with the ability to work with minimum supervision.

Accountabilities

  • May plan and supervise volunteers for food redistribution.
  • Networks with community partners and participates in weekly food procurement. 
  • Utilizes food programming and resources to build a community of Hope. 
  • Supports Ministry Unit through pick up of donations in the community. 
  • Safely unloads donations and assists with sorting of donations.
  • Drive cube van to pick up rescued food in absence of other staff members/Driver.
  • Responds to neighbour requests for specific food items, responds to complaints, follows up and documents as necessary. 
  • Adheres to established departmental policies and procedures regarding quality assurance, fire safety, sanitation, environment and infection control. 
  • Performs food handling, serving and cooking duties if required.

MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY

  • Reports directly to: Operations Manager
  • Direct reports for this position: None.

Financial And Materials Management

  • Minor material responsibility.
  • Uses or maintains organization assets in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Does not process any financial transactions with no budget responsibilities. The above responsibilities must be discharged in accordance with The Salvation Army’s Mission Statement, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct.

Working Conditions

  • Working environment is typically in the Family services building in generally agreeable conditions and some outdoor duties.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • May deal with upset people or challenging behaviours.
  • Temporary Full Time – 35 hours/wk.
  • Monday – Friday (Flexible scheduling may be required)
  • May 20th to August 22nd, 2025

Education, Experience And Qualifications

Canada Summer Job Eligibility:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • Education or experience in nutrition, or equivalent job experience.
  • FoodSafe certification is an asset.
  • Safe driving record and Class 5 driver’s license required.
  • Experience driving a cube van is an asset.

Skills And Capabilities

  • Current knowledge of issues and trends including best practices in the enhancement of quality of life and food security.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and highly developed interpersonal, communication, multitasking, and time management skills.
  • Able to problem solve on the spot, be resilient and flexible.
  • Ability to utilize related equipment such as various word processing including MS Office applications and email.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English.
  • Positive relations with community partners.
  • Able to work with a team consisting of staff and volunteers in a busy fast paced environment.
  • Able to perform moderate lifting (50 lbs.) and physical labour for long stretches.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry, vulnerable sector check

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $17.85 to $21.66 with a maximum of $25.99.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
