Position Description:

Fleet Manager, Electrical Systems is responsible for the engineering support and technical oversight of various electrical, control & automation Systems on board the SSML managed vessels. This role will leverage his existing knowledge and expertise in marine electrical systems and equipment to become a subject matter expert and the main point of contact for all technical matters associated with the systems. He will be also focusing on the crew training development as well as assisting with the delivery of the new projects. This position will ensure that the company safety & reliability standards are maintained through regular shipboard audits and developmental training as it relates to electrical engineering best practices.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Is familiar with the Health, Safety, Environmental Protection and Quality Policy (PL-005), and understands the responsibilities under the Environmental Management System (EMS). In keeping with this and other compliance policies, they understand their duty to report any environmental noncompliance and/or concern to their manager or members of the senior management team (including the highest level of management) either directly or through the open reporting system as per Management System guidelines.
  • Providing technical support of deficiencies of equipment or capability, developing technical solutions and risk assessments.
  • Providing technical advice to enable electrical and electronic equipment and/or systems to be correctly operated or maintained.
  • Conducting technical investigations into problems associated with marine electrical and electronic systems, equipment and/or software issues, including failure analysis and solution recommendation.
  • Developing and reviewing technical documentation including equipment specifications, installation and maintenance instructions, test and trials agendas, and engineering change documentation and drawings.
  • Investigating and formulating plans to deal with equipment obsolescence and material compatibility issues, conducting alternate part investigations and approvals.
  • Analyzing requirements with baseline changes to the ship’s configuration, equipment and software.
  • Liaise with OEMs, Service Providers and ship staff to support the investigation and resolution of defects.
  • Supporting and managing activities associated with the design and configuration control of electrical and electronic systems including conducting functional and physical configuration audits, and deviations and waivers documentation and risk assessments.
  • Develops effective documents and training material, carries out on board training and in certain cases, shore-based courses (for new and returning sea-staff) with respect to electrical equipment knowledge maintenance and procedures on board the company’s vessels
  • Works closely with other training superintendents to support electrical training on company vessels
  • Creates and implements ship specific electrical training documents and familiarization on these subjects
  • Participates in officers’ seminars and assists in providing a forum for information and knowledge exchange
  • Assists in the shipyard when a new vessel is being delivered to ensure that all electrical equipment is in order. Carries out training for the ship staff
  • Assists in secondhand vessel pre-purchase inspections
  • Performs other duties as required.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of three years of shipyard experience overseeing electrical and navigational equipment on board, as well as automation
  • Bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous experience on sea trials is asset as well as dealing with any design issues related to electrical and automation systems
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
  • Technical writing

Job Demands and/or Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work under pressure with strict deadlines
  • Must have mobility to conduct vessel inspections and fitness to travel
  • Will be required to carry a mobile device and laptop while travelling
