The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 located in Nome! What you will be doing: The incumbent will start the season in June working on a red king crab project in the coastal waters off Nome using plankton tows and benthic crab collectors to evaluate life cycle timing and growth of larval and juvenile red king crab. From mid-August until mid-September the incumbent will assist with monitoring the escapement of coho salmon using sonar at a remote field camp on the Unalakleet River, which will include beach seining for species apportionment and biological sampling. The Nome Commercial Fisheries research staff supports responsible management of the region's subsistence and commercial fisheries by conducting relevant and achievable studies into the life histories, abundance, and distribution of salmon and shellfish. Specifically for this position, the incumbent will have the opportunity to work with and learn about 2 species: red king crab and coho salmon, which is rare for most positions. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable field experience for pursuing a career in fisheries. This position is based in Nome, AK, which provides ample outdoor recreation possibilities. The working conditions you can expect: The red king crab project will be conducted during day trips out of Nome on a 30-foot vessel with an enclosed cabin. During these trips, plankton tows and deployment and retrieval of benthic crab collectors will be performed from an open deck. Sampling will consist of identifying, enumerating, and measuring red king crab. There will also be laboratory work processing samples collected on the boat trips. While in Nome, lodging will be provided at the state-owned bunkhouse, but food is not provided. The Unalakleet sonar project will be conducted at a remote field camp near Unalakleet, with considerable time spent on jet-powered skiffs. Daily activities include ensuring sonar equipment is functional, enumerating fish passage, and conducting beach seines for species apportionment and taking biological measurements. While at the field camp, lodging in a wall tent and food is provided and the incumbent must be able to work around and/or carry a firearm due to the possibility of a bear encounter. Both projects require the ability to work in cold, wet conditions. * Exposure to animals, insects, and inclement weather. * Significant amount of time spent working from a skiff in the marine environment. * Housing may consist of bunkhouses or wall tents. * This position is temporary. Minimum Qualifications High school graduation or the equivalent. OR Three months as an entry level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 1. OR Six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory. Special Requirements: Exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals may occur. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Some duties may be restricted for employees under the age of 18 in accordance with State and federal child labor laws. Positions are seasonal or temporary. Special Note: "High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years. An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required high school diploma or equivalent within three months may apply and be considered for a vacancy.
