Objectives of the Position

  • Assume functional leadership role in the Financial Reporting team.
  • Effectively manage, supervise and support the Financial Reporting team members to deliver services to BASF group companies in compliance with BASF policies & guidelines, internal controls requirements, local company legal and statutory requirements.
  • Ensure that service timelines and service quality meet the agreed service levels and targets.
  • Coach and develop the Financial Reporting team members to meet defined service standards through structured training and on the job coaching.
  • Contribute and support the Department Head, Managers and Experts in the implementation of project initiatives e.g. Continuous Improvements, Technology Enhancement, Internal Control, Balance Scorecard and any other ad hoc project roll outs etc.
  • To back up, assist with and perform Financial Reporting tasks as required.

Main Tasks

Functional Tasks (including but not limited to):

  • Supervise and monitor the Financial Reporting transaction processing and ensure delivery quality in terms of accuracy, completeness and timeliness on daily basis.
  • Review and analyze the booking of accounting and fixed asset transactions, master data maintenance, account reconciliation including account clearing as performed by the Financial Reporting team members.
  • Supervise and monitor to ensure month-end, quarter-end and year-end close steps are executed in accordance with work instructions and month end close checklist to ensure timely and accurate closure of accounts.
  • Perform analytical review of profit and loss accounts and balance sheet, trend analysis, cost center checks, fixed asset checks and transaction posting checks.
  • Supervise and monitor to ensure timely, accurate and complete preparation of month-end, quarter-end, year-end and statutory financial reports for BASF companies across Asia Pacific. This would include reports for group reporting, internal management reporting, statutory reporting as well as any agreed ad hoc reports required e.g. audit schedules, tax schedules etc.
  • Be a “Key User” within the team by providing expert knowledge/guidance/training to peers, Senior Analysts and Analysts to trouble shoot or liase with relevant stakeholders to resolve issues/queries related to Financial Reporting processes to improve their on-the-job ability.
  • Lead in working groups (i.e. Smart Close, Final Sprint, RRM, CbCR & etc.) with specific expertise knowledge.
  • Act as a backup for Manager when required or assist manager on planning of tasks and resources within a Team:
    • Support team strategic plan and objectives including organizing the daily business within the team.
    • Ensures a functioning back up regulation.
    • Allocates additional and/or temporary tasks which arises through the daily business.
    • Support the Manager with personnel planning and participate in hiring process as and when required.
    • Assist managers in providing feedback and reinforcement to team members regarding development needs and opportunities, and secure resources to support development efforts
    • Drive team motivation and moral by establishing good interpersonal relationships by helping team members feel valued, appreciated, and aware of business performance issues.
    • Participation in the personnel development and appraisal
  • Assume hands on, perform back up, other duties as BSSCKL management and changing business environment may require to be performed.

Compliance and Quality:

  • Manage and participate in any compliance audits and respond to audit queries.
  • Accountable in all work documentation and work processes update/development to meet Internal Control Framework and ensure compliance to BASF policies & guidelines, Financial Reporting Compliance requirements, local company legal and statutory requirements.

Continuous Improvement and Projects:

  • Identify, drive, and implement solutions with proactive measures in consultation with Department Head and Managers/Experts for continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Act as mentor to Analysts to encourage good practice, team spirit and a quality-orientated approach.
  • Lead regional projects and participate in global projects in Financial Reporting team.
  • Support standardization across regions and globally by focusing on alignment of end-to-end business process areas, system and tools.
  • Support in improving productivity of Financial Reporting by conducting relevant benchmarking exercise and monitoring through Key Performance Indexes.

Knowledge Management:

  • Assist to provide operational and strategic support in designing, implementation and continuous improvement of Financial Reporting internal functional training to maximise learning process based on current and future business needs.
  • Assist to develop, maintain and update a set of comprehensive and complete training materials of Financial Reporting internal functional training.
  • Work with the relevant stakeholders to understand service delivery information and technical knowledge and keep up to date on changes that may impact the training content and training delivery.
  • Supervise conduction of functional training in accordance with established training structure
  • Establish a knowledge database of issue logs, including resolution and preventive action to facilitate continuous learning, development and knowledge retention.
  • Support new and existing team members through proper and effective knowledge transfer; sharing of best practice thereby ensuring quality is maintained for sustainable knowledge development through any staff transition.
  • Act as process governance role as reviewer for company and country specific process documentation, based on the generic Desktop Procedures (ongoing task).

Frequent cooperation with relevant stakeholders:

  • Counterparts and/or relevant stakeholders in BASF companies, internal/external auditors, external consultants and BSSCKL cross functional units.
  • Specialists, Experts, Managers, Department Head, Senior Analysts, Analysts, and peers.
  • Global Finance Reporting functional units.

Minimum Education and Qualification Required for the Position:

Education:

  • University degree in finance and accounting or business studies; and/or
  • Chartered or Certified Professional Accountant or equivalent.

Working Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experiences in Financial Reporting or other accounting function, preferably with 2 years of supervising experience in accounting team. Competent candidates with lesser years of experience are considerable.
  • Preferably experience working in SAP system or other major ERP system’s work environment.
  • Experience in a shared service or business process outsourcing engagement will be an added advantage.
  • Experience working in a MNC or Malaysian Public listed company preferred.

Technical & Professional Knowledge:

  • Knowledge and understanding of Financial Reporting and other accounting functions.
  • Knowledge and experience of MS office tools.
  • Proficiency in English and other language required with good communication skill.
