The Challenge (Job Summary)
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented
Epic Operational Database Administrator (ODBA) to join our dynamic healthcare IT team. The Epic ODBA will be responsible for managing, maintaining, and optimizing the performance of our Epic system’s operational databases. This individual will ensure the highest standards of data integrity, availability, and security while supporting Epic database operations across the healthcare organization.
Your Day To Day & Essential Functions
- Database Management: Administer, maintain, and monitor Epic system databases (such as Clarity, Caboodle, Chronicles) for optimal performance and security.
- Data Integrity & Performance Optimization: Implement and optimize data processes, conduct regular health checks, and ensure the stability of operational databases to meet organizational needs.
- Backup and Recovery: Develop, test, and maintain backup and recovery procedures to ensure the safety and reliability of all database systems.
- Troubleshooting & Issue Resolution: Provide timely support for database-related incidents, diagnose issues, and apply fixes or escalate when necessary.
- Security and Compliance: Ensure Epic databases are secure, compliant with HIPAA regulations, and meet all relevant data privacy and security policies.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the Epic technical teams, application analysts, and other IT departments to troubleshoot, plan, and implement system upgrades, patches, and changes.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain comprehensive documentation of database configurations, processes, and changes, and produce regular performance reports for senior management.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay up to date on the latest Epic database technologies, tools, and best practices. Recommend improvements and new solutions to enhance system performance and efficiency.
What You Need To Succeed (Competencies, Education)
- Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a database administrator, with at least 5 years of experience working with Epic systems, specifically with Epic Clarity, Caboodle, or Chronicles.
- Technical Skills:
- Unix proficiency: Strong Unix skills using the command-line prompt, including navigating directory structures and file manipulation.
- Operating Systems & File Systems: Understanding of operating system concepts such as user and group ownership, file permissions, file system/volume group configuration, and related tasks.
- Scripting and Utilities: Knowledge of command shells (Korn, POSIX, Bourne, or C) and scripting languages and utilities such as awk, sed, and Perl.
- Epic Systems: Experience with Epic database tools, including Epic Clarity, Caboodle, and Chronicles.
- Database Management: Strong knowledge of SQL and database management systems (Oracle, SQL Server, etc.).
- Backup & Disaster Recovery: Experience with backup, disaster recovery, and high-availability strategies.
- Data Security: Knowledge of data security principles and practices.
- Certifications:
- Epic ODBA certification required.
- Epic-certified in relevant areas (such as Clarity, Caboodle, or Chronicles) is preferred.
- Additional certifications in database management or system administration are a plus.
- Soft Skills:
- Strong leadership and communication skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to create, understand, and follow processes to ensure successful execution of critical maintenance procedures.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical staff.
