About the Role:
The Engineering Manager role is responsible for overseeing the design, development, and execution of mechanical components and systems while ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in mechanical design and material handling applications, excellent leadership skills, and a proven track record of managing engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Management:
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of mechanical designers, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment.
- Set clear expectations, delegate tasks effectively, and provide guidance to ensure team success.
- Conduct performance reviews, identify development opportunities, and support career growth for team members.
- Promote best practices in mechanical design, engineering standards, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Project Management & Execution:
- Oversee mechanical design projects from conception through production, ensuring technical excellence and efficiency.
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation while mitigating risks and resolving challenges.
- Collaborate with cross-functional team, including Electrical, Purchasing & Manufacturing departments, to ensure seamless integration of mechanical designs.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and company quality requirements.
Technical Expertise & Innovation:
- Provide technical oversight and review of mechanical designs, ensuring feasibility, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness.
- Drive innovation by identifying opportunities for new technologies, materials, and design methodologies.
- Lead design reviews, provide constructive feedback, and ensure adherence to engineering best practices.
- Support prototype development, testing, and validation to refine product designs.
Process Improvement & Documentation:
- Establish and improve engineering workflows, design standards, and documentation practices.
- Monitor and adjust design guidelines, CAD libraries, and BOM (Bill of Materials) management processes as required.
- Ensure proper documentation of design decisions, revisions, and engineering calculations.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 15+ years of experience in mechanical design engineering, with at least 7 years in a leadership or management role.
- Proficiency in mechanical design software, AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk Vault, MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project).
- Strong knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes (machining, fabrication, sheet metal, etc.)
- Experience leading engineering teams, managing projects, and collaborating with cross-functional groups.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to make data-driven decisions.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly.
- Knowledge, application and adherence to technical and safety standards, industry best practices and regulations in George A. Wright’s field of business.
- Adhere to company and customer site safety protocols, use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and actively participate in safety training and hazard prevention practices. Ensure that Good Manufacturing Practices are adhered to at all times.
Working Environment
- The majority of the time will be spent working in-office at our manufacturing facility (Scarborough, ON).
- The incumbent will be expected to occasionally visit work sites to measure for equipment, with occasional travel to customer locations across the GTA as required.
