About the Position: The City of San Bernardino is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Engineering Assistant I (Flex) to join our Public Works Department. This full-time, entry-level position provides crucial support in the areas of land development, capital improvement design, and traffic engineering. The ideal candidate will assist in preparing engineering plans, reviewing designs, conducting field inspections, and supporting the overall engineering processes that shape the City's infrastructure. A Day in the Life Consists of: As an Engineering Assistant I (Flex) with the City of San Bernardino, your day will be centered around supporting engineers and technical staff in the design, review, and implementation of engineering projects. You'll be involved in both office and fieldwork, helping ensure that public works projects meet the highest standards of quality and compliance. Your day may include: * Assisting engineers with the preparation, design, and review of plans for public improvements and private developments. * Conducting site visits to ensure that engineering conditions are met and documenting findings. * Reviewing plans, designs, and cost estimates to ensure conformance with engineering standards and city regulations. * Using AutoCAD and drafting equipment to prepare engineering drawings and documents. * Reviewing traffic and land development engineering plans to check for accuracy and adherence to specifications. * Preparing reports, interpreting engineering data, and providing recommendations for improvements. * Supporting public works and capital improvement projects by coordinating with contractors, utility companies, and other agencies. * Assisting with field inspections and helping with the issuance of construction and grading permits. * Participating in team meetings and project updates to track progress and ensure timely completion of tasks. Education and Experience: High School Diploma, G.E.D.; AND at least two (2) years of college-level coursework in engineering, architectural design, mathematics or related field, and one (1) year of experience working as a subprofessional engineering technician or as an Engineering Assistant I-(FLEX) for the City; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  An Engineering Assistant I may be considered for advancement to Engineering Assistant II after demonstrating proficiency to perform the full range of duties of the more experienced class. Typically, an Engineering Assistant I is expected to be capable of meeting the proficiency criteria within a two-year period, depending on an individual's education, prior experience and progression in performing a full range of Engineering Assistant II duties as described in the established performance criteria. An Engineering Assistant I may also be advanced to Engineering Assistant II after obtaining a valid Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate.  Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment: A valid State driver's license is required.
