Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The purpose of Chilled Water Systems (CWS) is to produce and distribute chilled water for approximately 155 buildings located at the main campus and two (2) satellite campuses in a cost effective, efficient and reliable manner. Chilled water is produced in two ways. One is by an extensive chilled water generating system - the single, virtual chilled water plant, comprised of four (4) networked chiller plants that are operated as a single virtual system and the second is by stand-alone chillers that are building specific. Additionally, Chilled Water Systems provides electric and steam load balance for Cogeneration Systems. CWS is part of UNC Energy Services.
Position Summary
Assist with system maintenance - Support senior technicians in inspecting and maintaining chilled water systems, including pumps, valves, instrumentation, controls, and pipes.
Monitor system performance - Collect data on system performance, such as temperature, pressure, and flow rates, and assist in analyzing the results.
Help troubleshoot issues - Assist in diagnosing and solving problems with chilled water systems, such as leaks, flow imbalances, or mechanical failures.
Document system changes - Update and maintain accurate records of any changes, repairs, or maintenance on the chilled water systems.
Assist with system commissioning - Help in testing new installations or upgrades to ensure the chilled water systems are functioning according to specifications.
Conduct equipment inspections - Perform routine inspections of the equipment (e.g., chillers, cooling towers) and report any issues or irregularities.
Help with preventive maintenance schedules - Support in scheduling and coordinating regular preventive maintenance tasks for the chilled water system.
Assist in system upgrades or retrofits - Provide assistance in planning, designing, and executing system upgrades, including equipment replacements or improvements.
Support energy efficiency initiatives - Gather data and help implement projects focused on improving the energy efficiency of the chilled water system.
Participate in safety audits - Assist in ensuring that all safety protocols are being followed and help identify areas where safety can be improved in the chilled water system operations.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency with coursework in mathematics and one year of experience relating to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
