Engineering Aide
A 9.5% general salary increase will be applied effective July 2025.

The City of Ontario has an exciting opportunity for an Engineering Aide to join the Utilities Engineering Division of the Ontario Municipal Utilities Company. The Engineering Aide participates in a variety of engineering projects and related tasks. This role performs a wide range of para-professional office and field work in support of program services and activities to technical and professional staff. This includes supporting the land development review process and geographical information system programs.

Note: The Engineering Aide classification is a common classification used in multiple City departments. This recruitment will result in an eligibility list for this classification to meet the future staffing needs of the departments with openings in this classification. The current opening is in the Utilities Engineering Division of the Ontario Municipal Utilities Company.

Examples Of Essential Functions
The essential functions typically performed by the Engineering Aide include the following:
- Routine design, plan checking, manual and automated drafting and calculations responsibilities in conjunction with preparation of plans, specifications and cost estimates for roadway, water, sewer, storm drain, traffic signal and street light plans, traffic studies, etc.
- Field survey work and interpretation of field survey data.
- Routine construction inspection and/or site investigation.
- Preparation of display maps or exhibits for meetings.
- Routine research work
- Maintenance of maps, records, etc.
- Collection of information, water and/or wastewater samples for data analysis.
- Basic computer operations, including word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications.
- Providing information to the general public.
- May oversee the work of subordinate personnel as assigned.
- Performs other job-related duties and responsibilities as required
When assigned to Utilities Engineering, may also perform the following:
- Track, log, and evaluate incoming plan check submissions to ensure submittal is ready for review and return submission comments.
- Prepare a weekly tracking log for outstanding plan check and entitlement review submittals. Utilize excel to provide statistical data related to past reviews.
- Utilize excel charts and graphs to develop reporting metrics and prepare a monthly report.
- Prepare a weekly presentation utilizing PowerPoint.
- Update standard drawings, design guidelines and specifications, general notes, design checklists, and approved materials list.
- Support the maintenance of the Geographic Information System (GIS) program to include the updating of the water, sewer, and recycled water GIS-based atlases and other GIS-related programs.
Qualification Guidelines
Education
Equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by technical courses in civil, environment and/or related engineering subjects including basic computer operations.
Experience
One year of direct experience in a related field.
Desirable Experience
Three years of para-professional drafting/design, office and field engineering work in a municipal government setting; and knowledge of municipal water, sewer, and recycled water systems.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, ArcGIS, AutoCAD and Accela.
