Position Overview
Embedded inside WMATA’s Power Department, you will support the design, installation, and commissioning of electrical infrastructure that will charge and power one of the country’s largest
Zero-Emission Bus (ZEB) fleets. The role is balanced between office-based design review and field engineering at WMATA bus garages in DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
Key Responsibilities
- Design Review and Analysis
- Evaluate 34.5 kV-and-below distribution designs, load studies, PV interconnections, and DC/AC charging layouts.
- Verify equipment sizing, protective-device coordination, short-circuit and arc-flash studies, and lighting photometrics.
- Produce formal comments, red-lines, and constructability notes for design-build teams.
- Construction and Commissioning Support
- Conduct site surveys and field inspections.
- Witness factory and site-acceptance tests for switchgear, chargers, and ancillary equipment.
- Prepare punch lists, deficiency logs, and close-out reports.
- Standards and Documentation
- Update WMATA standard drawings, specifications, SOPs, preventive-maintenance procedures, and charge-management guidelines.
- Draft scopes of work for future procurements and change-order justifications.
- Project Coordination
- Attend weekly progress meetings and brief the WMATA Task Manager on issues, risks, and required decisions.
- Interface with consultants, OEMs, and WMATA Maintenance to align design intent with long-term O&M practices.
- Research and Continuous Improvement
- Track emerging EV-charging technologies, codes, and incentive programs.
- Recommend innovations that improve safety, resiliency, and life-cycle cost.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related field.
- 3+ years of electrical-design experience (power distribution, facility electrification, or comparable).
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and familiarity with NFPA 70/70B/130 and ANSI/NETA MTS-2015.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification in DC, MD, or VA.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience with battery-electric bus infrastructure, EVSE, or CMS.
- PE license in DC, MD, or VA.
- Solar-PV or high-capacity charging-station design experience.
Skills & Competencies
- Power-system analysis (load, coordination, short-circuit, arc-flash).
- Construction-phase design review and field-engineering support.
- Ability to develop standards, SOPs, and maintenance documentation.
- Collaborative, solution-oriented mindset with keen attention to safety and code compliance.
Work Location & Schedule
- Primary office: 4100 Garden City Drive, Hyattsville, MD 20785
- Routine day trips to WMATA bus garages across the region and occasional night/weekend shifts during energizations or outages
- Initial twelve-month assignment aligned to the ZEV rollout, with expected option years
Hourly Rate Range: $52 – $65 per hour (W-2), commensurate with experience and credentials; higher consideration (up to $75/h) for Professional Engineers or candidates with direct EV-charging-infrastructure design experience.”
