Duties and Responsibilities
* Develops, coordinates, and conducts marine science and conservation education classes, field trips, and activities of the Waikiki Aquarium (WAQ) SSP (School Support Program), both on and off-site, for target audiences, including schools, educators and community groups.
* Promotes and provides innovative input in the development, coordination, management, scientific accuracy, and communication of Education initiatives and programs.
* Provides, in cooperation with WAQ staff and professional colleagues, workshops and other pre-and in-service training for Aquarium and Education professionals, on- and off-site that may occur after normal business hours, on weekends and/or holidays.
* Coordinates and manages SSP program instructors, student staff and volunteers. Develops and coordinates training for volunteer and student staff, provides supervision and evaluation.
* Develops and maintains budget of School Support Program, tracks revenue and expenditures, provides reports to the Education Director. Maintains program statistics and records for department reports, Aquarium reports, grants and other needs.
* Demonstrates initiative in establishing new Education programs and collaborations. Promotes initiatives and programs, and enhances strategic partnerships relating to those efforts.
* Works closely with WAQ colleagues in the conceptualization, design and development of innovative educational exhibits and associated educational content that capture viewer's attention and ensure user participation and learning, as needed.
* Contributes towards, coordinates, or prepares, grant applications for WAQ and Education programs from corporate, State and Federal agencies and institutes and other entities, when requested.
* Contributes to concepting and implementation of revenue-generating programs and projects.
* Represents, in cooperation with the Education Director, the School Support Program and its philosophy of science and conservation education to schools, teachers, and area professionals.
* Develops, tests, disseminates and integrates curriculum, materials, and programs for the WAQ School Support Program, the WAQ, and exhibit uses. Publishes results of curriculum and program testing in professional journals and/or presents papers or demonstrates programs at professional conferences.
* Prepares program descriptions, brochures, supportive materials for the SSP. Prepares and disseminates media and PR announcements to fill programs as appropriate. Registers and tracks participants through the SSP.
* Maintains working relationships with professionals in education, museum, scientific and environmental communities. Attends and represents the Aquarium at professional conferences.
* Serves on committees and attends public hearings which affect the interests of the Aquarium, as needed. Acts as WAQ spokesperson, as required.
* Serves as an information resource for the public and the Waikiki Aquarium. Provides expertise and support for all Aquarium programs, as required.
* Contributes towards, organizes, or chairs committees, develops specialty programs/projects in collaboration with other WAQ departments or with external entities. Participates in off-site meetings and seminars.

Education and Professional Work Experience
Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Education, Science, Museum Education, or Marine Biology and 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for education in a community education setting, classroom and/or field science education such as an aquarium, museum, natural science center, or a formal classroom; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of education in a community education setting, classroom and/or field science education as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
* Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with education in a community education setting, classroom and/or field science education.
* Demonstrated ability to resolve wide-ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
* Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
* Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.

Supplemental Minimum Qualifications
* Proven ability to assimilate complex scientific concepts and materials and accurately interpret this information to a broad range of audiences, including preschool through university students, teachers, volunteers, and the community at large.
* Demonstrated ability to experiment and cultivate the ideas of others to identify solutions to complex and less-defined problems.
* Knowledge of education methods, materials, procedures and techniques utilized in curriculum development as applicable to science or museum education.
* Demonstrated ability to maintain records, prepare grant applications, routine statistical analyses for departmental, annual, and other reports or applications.
* Evidence of ability to work harmoniously in a lead or support position within a team, and an understanding of the importance of meeting performance standards and deadlines and of free and open communication among team members.
* Demonstrated familiarity with annual budget and project budget production and management, and program and resource administration.
* Considerable experience in working with volunteers, including their training, performance evaluation, scheduling and management.
* Proven ability to establish and maintain rapport with students, teachers and the public as shown through past evaluations or letter of recommendation comments.
* Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions, ability to work independently and meet performance standards.
* Ability to travel independently to and from off-site meetings, events and the WAQ in a timely manner, fulfilled by possession of a valid Driver's License (Class 3), or use of other transportation which meets position needs.
* Must be able to work some nights, weekends, and/or holidays and flexible working hours to offer programs in time periods convenient for the target audiences to attend.
* Ability to lead on-site and off-site activities, including walking, hiking, wading, swimming, snorkeling and others as appropriate to the program.
* Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds, with or without assistance, for the purpose of transporting specimens, equipment and materials to/from and within the Aquarium.
Desirable Qualifications
* Knowledge of Hawai'i's marine natural history, and the biology and ecology of aquatic organisms.
* Working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with education related to marine biology and conservation, or similar work area.
* Has computer skills in areas such as: databases, desktop publishing, image manipulation and/or graphics.
* Has experience in editing text materials.Knowledge and experience working with State of Hawai'i Department of Education and/or National Content and Performance Standards for Science Education.
* Knowledge of photography at a level sufficient for documenting program classes and activities.
