Summary

Brief Description

Responsible for planning, developing, and producing content for print and digital products and platforms, as well as managing assigned subject areas This role includes writing original content, editing technical materials, collaborating across teams, and ensures that copy adheres to SME Media’s style and quality standards. The Editor also supports SME Media’s mission to expand its audience and industry relevance through high-quality, impactful content.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS:

  • Works with various teams throughout the organization to support existing print and digital media products, specialty publications and the development of new products.
  • Write and edit original articles, columns and features for all print and digital media products and platforms.
  • Ensure technical accuracy and relevance of all materials.
  • Obtains and verifies for accuracy appropriate drawings, charts, formulas, graphs, and tables.
  • Collaborates with contributing writers for all print and digital media products and platforms.
  • Oversees progress of contracted authors and ensures timely delivery of content
  • Researches, gathers, and edits illustrations and other material for articles as necessary.
  • Investigates potential new topics to align with audience needs, based on market research, technological trends, expert interviews, etc.
  • Posts content to the website and ensures that all content is optimized for maximum audience reach.
  • Posts content to social media platforms as needed.
  • Manages assigned subject areas (“editorial departments”) and content verticals, ensuring alignment with SME Media’s goals.
  • Maintains adherence to budgets and schedules.
  • Represents SME at events, conferences and tradeshows.
  • Serves as webinar and podcast host.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, engineering, or a related field.
  • At least three (3) years of related experience in publishing, engineering, or manufacturing environments, with strong technical editing skills.
  • Experience managing subject areas (“editorial departments”) and collaborating with cross-functional teams required.
  • Proficient in standard word processing programs.
  • Direct experience using Adobe InCopy required.
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills, and organizational skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented and team-oriented, with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience working directly in a content management system and posting content to digital platforms required.
  • Working knowledge of social media marketing and strategies to optimize audience engagement preferred.
  • Background and/or knowledge in digital publishing preferred.
  • Print production knowledge preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Normal office environment.
  • Regular, in-person attendance required
  • Primary office location: Southfield, MI
  • Travel required, which may include domestic and occasional international trips for conferences, meetings, tradeshows, and events.
  • May occasionally visit manufacturing facilities for research, events, or interviews, requiring adherence to safety protocols and appropriate attire.
  • During travel, the role may require traversing large event spaces, standing for extended periods, or carrying materials such as promotional items or media kits (up to 25 pounds).

The salary range for this position is $70,920 - $81,000 per year, based on experience and qualifications. Offers typically fall within this range based on individual qualifications and budget availability. In addition to base salary, SME offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, 403(b) with company matching, generous paid time off and holidays, professional development and training opportunities, and additional wellness and work-life balance benefits. Certain positions may also be eligible for bonus/incentive compensation, subject to role and company policies.
