Established in 1998 and located in midtown Manhattan, Bloomsbury USA is a general interest publisher of adult and children’s books that has become known for both its high-quality fiction and non-fiction for adults and children as well as its extensive Academic publishing from the world’s most recognized experts.
Position Profile
Bloomsbury adult trade division seeks an editor to acquire and publish serious nonfiction across multiple subject areas. The Editor will evaluate, acquire, develop, and edit manuscripts. They will be responsible for supervising new titles through all stages of the editing process and coordinate all processes of book production from acquisition to publication. The Editor must have strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently as well as within a group environment.
Key Responsibilities
Acquire approximately 8 projects per year
Develop and edit a varied range of manuscripts
Read, evaluate, and develop materials for acquisition
Maintain and develop relationships with authors and agents
Work with authors on content, style, and format of publication and provide them with editorial feedback
Attend weekly editorial and design meetings to discuss incoming and existing acquisitions
Read submissions and provide feedback for editorial colleagues
Negotiate purchase of manuscripts with authors and agents
Write catalog/cover copy and title information sheets for frontlist titles
Generate profit and loss estimates
Collaborate with design and production on style, schedule, format, and aesthetics of publication; prepare manuscripts for production
Work with marketing and publicity departments to care for authors
Represent individual titles in interdepartmental meetings
Perform special projects as required
Requirements:
Candidate must have a four-year undergraduate degree
At least five years of experience in an editorial capacity at a publishing imprint, including acquisition experience
Excellent attention to detail, quality, process, and organization
Strong and up-to-date knowledge of the retail and library markets for adult books
Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously and show initiative
Exceptional oral and written communication skills
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
Location
All candidates must reside within travel distance of the Maryland or New York offices on a hybrid-remote schedule.
