Summary

McLean is looking for a Dredge Operations Manager to join our team in the Chesapeake, VA area.


The Dredge Operations Manager is responsible for the overall profit and loss of all assigned projects, or specific areas and disciplines within those projects. This role requires extensive knowledge and experience in the dredging & marine construction industries. The Dredge Operations Manager collaborates daily with Field Supervisors and oversees the execution of construction work through these supervisors. They ensure that Field Supervisors are held accountable for the safe, efficient, and timely completion of their assigned projects. The Dredge Operations Manager works closely with the Dredge Division Manager, Project Managers, Project Superintendents, the Construction Manager, Equipment Managers, Safety Personnel, Engineers, and other Field Supervisors to ensure projects are completed successfully, safely, on time, and within budget. They actively participate in planning dredging/construction methods, safety protocols, project scheduling, and budgeting during both the dredging/construction and pre-construction phases. Additionally, they are responsible for ensuring that equipment is properly utilized, maintained, and cared for, including troubleshooting equipment failures as they arise.


The Dredge Operations Manager reviews purchase orders, rental agreements, and subcontracts, manages project budgets (with a focus on labor and equipment costs), and ensures adequate labor and equipment resources are available & properly allocated between projects. They communicate project needs to the Dredge Division Manager with ample lead time to maintain resource levels. At times, they also serve as the primary point of contact for the company when addressing, negotiating, or resolving contractual, commercial, or technical issues with Owners or Subcontractors. Additionally, they work closely with Project Superintendents, Project Managers, and the Dredge Division Manager to develop and mentor the careers of field supervisors on their projects. He/she also supervises the operation of the Port Tobacco dredge disposal facility at Shirley Plantation on the James River in Charles City County VA.



Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:


Possesses a basic understanding of CPM schedules.


Confers with and directs Supervisory personnel as well as subcontractors engaged in the planning and executation of work on/for the project.


Engages in dredging/construction planning, means and methods evaluations, project scheduling, material procurement, subcontractor management, change order identification, quality control, and job site safety.


Monitors safety, schedule and cost, and makes necessary adjustments to operations in support of established goals, budgets, and contract requirements.


Possesses basic knowledge of cost and revenue projection process.


Inspects work in progress to ensure the work conforms to the specifications and the dredging/construction schedules are followed.


Regularly interfaces with Construction Manager to coordinate equipment and human resources for assigned project.


Confers with supervisory and engineering personnel, inspectors, and material suppliers to resolve construction problems.


Possesses capability to read, review, and interpret procedures, drawings, manuals, specifications, etc.


Understands the importance of maintaning horizontal and vertical control of underwater grades (dredge templates), pay verses non-pay quantities, the use of hydrographic surveys to monitor job progress and billings, and has the ability to read & review these surveys and bucket files to ensure efficiency of dredge operations.


Identifies potential delays and implements strategies to mitigate them. Assists in the resolution of extra work situations and provides timely notice to the Dredge Division Manager and/or Project Manager.


Monitors progress and cost reports and adjusts schedules as indicated by those reports.


Ensures the preparation of final field records for the project, including as-built documents.


Education and/or Experience

Degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management preferred, but not requiredor equivalent combination of education and experience. A minimum of 10 years of dredging experience working in the three dredging methodologies utilized most commonly (barge mounted excavator, clamshell and hydraulic) and at least 5-10 years of experience in cost and schedule control.


Other Skills and Abilities

Must be at least 18 years old, have reliable transportation to work and able to pass a physical/drug screen. Must be able to pass a Homeland Security background check to qualify for a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
