Your New Role

Implement agreed HR strategies in the division that support achievement of business goals through driving outstanding performance, talent management, succession planning, employee engagement, development and retention.

This role is a key strategic business partner within the divisional senior leadership team (SLT) and the postholder will influence stakeholders whilst operating effectively at both strategic and operational levels.


Principal Accountabilities:

  • Work collaboratively as part of the divisional SLT, contributing to the formulation and delivery of the business strategy and the instrumental role of HR in the achievement of this.
  • Work closely with senior managers and leaders to review the divisional needs in line with future growth and goals and lead associated organisational change ensuring results are quickly realised whilst maintaining a healthy culture and positive employee engagement levels.
  • Work collaboratively with the HR Director and HR Business Partner (M&A and Special Projects) to devise the strategy for integration of acquisitions and provide strategic leadership to the operational HR team of the same.
  • Provide strategic leadership to the divisional operational HR team in managing and executing divisional projects aligned with organisational goals, including redeployments, restructures, redundancies, TUPE and other local initiatives.
  • Drive up the capability of managers and leaders through designing HR initiatives for execution.
  • Provide strategic direction and be the escalation point for the divisional operational HR team in advising line managers on the management of people processes including sickness absence management, poor performance management, disciplinary and grievance.
  • With particular focus to our culture and overall employee experience of our people, implement strategies to ensure that it serves to attract, motivate, develop and retain great people at each stage of the employee lifecycle journey.
  • Leverage engagement survey data and insights to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement and provide strategic leadership in the implementation of action planning to transform culture, motivate teams and support the Company to achieve strategic priorities.
  • Build a high-performance culture by driving an effective performance management system that links Company and individual objectives and learning and development needs aligned to our Technical Development Frameworks and Career Toolkits.
  • In collaboration with the SLT, identify and/ or solution talent priorities to enhance business capability and the development of key skills via the production of training matrices.
  • Succession planning & talent management - lead the annual talent review process with the SLT including the identification of high potential individuals (completion of 9-box grid) and identification of next role, development (including leadership development) required & timescale.
  • Work with the SLT on the implementation of personal development plans and monitor of progress across the division.
  • Work with senior managers and leaders to establish a programme of development relevant to building our people capability and fulfilling potential at all levels ensuring the effective utilisation of apprenticeships, the development of graduate programmes alongside other programmes of learning including leveraging the Ipsum internal training business.
  • Work closely with senior managers to maintain competitive pay, T&Cs, benefits and progression structures across the division’s operational roles that meet the needs of the business to attract and retain talented people and incentivise and reward high performance.
  • Prepare the divisional monthly HR report (and ad-hoc reports as may be required) for the Group HR Director, presenting divisional HR metrics and analysis and progress on strategic initiatives.
  • Drive business performance and improvement in the division through the use of insights, data and evidence.
  • Take accountability for driving completion of compliance e-learning courses across the division.
  • Ensure statutory HR compliance across the division, for example, gender pay gap reporting, as appropriate.
  • Provide strategic leadership to the divisional operational HR team contributing to the continuous improvement of HR systems, practices, policies and procedures.
  • Lead and motivate an effective divisional operational HR team of HR Business Partners, Graduates and Apprentices to deliver a pragmatic, professional, business-oriented operational HR service, utilising policies and procedures that are in line with legal, regulatory and best practice requirements whilst remaining appropriate to the needs of the business.


About You

Required Qualifications & Professional Membership(s):

  • CIPD level 7 qualification preferred.
  • Chartered membership of the CIPD preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification preferred.

Knowledge & Experience:

  • Extensive experience in an HR role at a senior level.
  • Experience of leading an effective HR team.
  • Proven experience of developing strong and trusted strategic business partnering relationships with business leaders providing clear HR guidance, appropriate challenge and commercially-minded and solutions-focused advice.
  • Demonstrable expertise in people and cultural change management with the ability to mitigate cultural conflict.
  • Knowledge of trends in employee retention, talent management, succession planning and high-performance and engagement strategies.
  • Familiarity with HR systems and the ability to generate insights from HR data.

  • Strong employment law knowledge.
  • Able to think strategically and solve problems creatively.
  • A strong understanding of HR principles and practices.
  • Pragmatic and results-focused and commercially-minded with strong analytical skills able to assess commercial and financial risk.
  • Strategic approach alongside a “roll-up-your sleeves” attitude with a focus on delivery.
  • Proactive in identifying opportunities to improve business performance.
  • Tenacity and resilience in navigating unforeseen challenges and operating in an uncertain, challenging and deadline-driven environment.
  • Able to work flexibly, calmly and efficiently whilst responding to multiple and ever-changing business priorities.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to influence thinking within the SLT and Divisional Managing Directors.
  • Self-motivated and results orientated.
  • Able to work both independently and as part of collaborative teams.
  • Excellent communication - both written and oral, negotiation and influencing skills - with the ability to relate to employees and management and leaders at all levels and navigate challenging conversations.
