Director of Marketing and Engagement
Working closely with the Chief Business Development and Marketing Officer (CBDMO), the Director of Marketing and Engagement provides leadership to and management of the Marketing team, as well as the strategic direction and oversight of firmwide and practice-specific campaigns and marketing efforts to drive client and prospect engagement.
The Director of Marketing and Engagement leads the development and execution of the firm’s marketing technology, content and campaign strategies, and events to support revenue growth objectives. This role collaborates with the Marketing and Business Development (MBD) Department leadership and MBD practice liaisons to create and implement measurable plans and campaigns that drive brand awareness, client engagement, and revenue growth.
This position is also responsible for brand management and development, including the development, implementation and execution of effective marketing and promotional strategies in alignment with established priorities and plans in areas that include creative and content marketing, marketing and digital technology, and external marketing communications. This position will also oversee the development of special projects as needed.
This position manages a high-performing team and oversees key marketing programs and operations to ensure alignment with the firm’s business development goals. The Director of Marketing and Engagement maintains professionalism and strict confidentiality in all client and firm matters.
The Director of Marketing and Engagement position can be located in either the Chicago, New York or Washington, D.C. office. Katten offers a hybrid work model, allowing the flexibility to work both on-site and remotely on a regular basis (KattenFlex).

Strategic Leadership
- Develop and implement a multi-year strategic roadmap aligned with the firm’s business goals in marketing technology, content, and campaign initiatives and events.
- Identify opportunities for innovation and digital transformation across marketing functions.
- Serve as a strategic peer and driver of positioning and promoting key services, campaigns, and events to drive demand, growth, and loyalty.
- Benchmark the firm’s marketing infrastructure, performance, and investment against industry best practices annually and report findings to CBDMO.
- Develop and manage department budget strategy, including investment prioritization across technology, events, and operations
Marketing Technology and Data Strategy
- Establish a cohesive technology vision and architecture to support marketing and business development goals.
- Direct the evaluation, implementation, and integration of enterprise marketing platforms, including CRM, ERM, CMS, and marketing automation tools.
- Develop a data strategy to enable advanced analytics and actionable insights for campaign optimization and sales enablement.
- Partner with IT leadership to ensure compliance with governance and security standards.
- Manage relationships with technology vendors, including contract negotiations and annual performance evaluations.
Content, Campaign and Brand Management
- Act as a brand steward, ensuring messaging and visual presentation are consistent across all channels and represent the Katten brand.
- Refine and enforce brand strategy through use of templates, style guides, graphic design, and governance.
- Drive the development and implementation of marketing plans and campaigns in alignment with strategic priorities and practices, and measure and report on campaign metrics and efficacy.
- Maintain a deep understanding of the firm’s practice and sector focus and client and prospect targeting to map client journeys, personas, and market segmentation to create targeted campaigns.
- In partnership with the Director of Client Intelligence, analyze marketing data to develop actionable insights to practices and makes recommendations on areas for optimization.
- Collaborate with business development teams to create account-based marketing plans for key clients.
- Collaborate with creative and content teams to develop compelling marketing collateral, thought leadership, and digital assets.
- Oversee social media and employee engagement strategies to amplify brand visibility.
- Continuously evaluate and enhance internal and external marketing communication strategies to align with firm objectives.
Event Strategy and Campaign Management
- Lead the optimization of events and sponsorship investments, a critical go-to-market strategy for the firm.
- Establish a firm-wide events strategy aligned with business development and client engagement objectives for each practice group.
- Develop operational framework for measuring and optimizing marketing ROI across all channels and creates and maintains comprehensive ROI reporting on marketing and events initiatives.
Innovation and Strategic Growth
- Introduce innovative ideas related to digital marketing, data analytics, Generative AI, and emerging technologies.
- Implement tools and frameworks to measure and optimize marketing ROI across all channels.
Team Leadership and Development
- Lead a multidisciplinary team, fostering a collaborative, high-functioning environment. focused on building an innovative, creative, and client-centric marketing program for the practices, industries, and regions that nurture both clients and targets.
- Define professional development goals and provides coaching, training, and career path planning.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Directly supervises a team of three, with responsibility for a team of more than twelve. Responsibilities include mentoring, training, and developing employees; planning, assigning and directing work; evaluating performance; resolving problems; and making recommendations for hiring, budgeting, promotion and compensation.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Journalism, Marketing, Communications or related field is required. Ten or more years of marketing management experience along with a strong background in all relevant areas including brand development and management, marketing communications and digital technology.
- Advanced knowledge of marketing technology platforms, including CRM, CMS, BI tools, and marketing automation software.
- Strong leadership, project management, and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to manage multiple initiative and projects, handle complex relationships and the ability to develop employees.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Ability to communicate with courtesy and diplomacy, efficiently follow written and verbal instructions, provide information, and maintain effective relationships with a diverse group of attorneys, clients, staff, and outside contacts.
- Must be quality and results oriented. Proactive with excellent troubleshooting, problem resolution, and follow-through skills. Ability to identify and analyze complex marketing issues and recommend and implement solutions.
- Understand business implications of decisions, display orientation to profitability, demonstrate knowledge of market and competition and align work with strategic goals.
- Exceptional organizational skills including record keeping, data collection, and system information. Ability to compile and analyze data and furnish concise, detailed information in report format, written correspondence, e-mail or verbally.
- Exhibit a high degree of initiative and critical-thinking skills in exercising independent judgment to manage multiple priorities simultaneously in a demanding, fast-paced, detail-oriented work environment, and make decisions based upon results of research.
- Ability to work effectively under remote management.
- Expertise in financial management, budget planning, and ROI-driven decision-making.

- Ability to occasionally retrieve and distribute marketing-related materials, written documentation, or office supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
- Work may require more than 37.5 hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position.
In Washington D.C. office, the annualized salary range for this position is $230,000 to $300,000. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience and other job-related factors permitted by law.
