Summary

Scion Nonprofit Staffing has been engaged to conduct an immediate search for a Director of Human Resources for an independent, coeducational, college preparatory day school serving grades 6-12 located on the San Francisco peninsula. Reporting to the Chief Financial and Operating Officer, the Director of Human Resources is a senior leader who partners across the school to develop and implement systems and structures that help to build an inclusive, engaged, and high-performing workplace aligned with the school's mission and core values. This full-time, on-site role directs the design, planning and implementation of HR programs, policies, and procedures in support of the recruitment, retention, engagement, and inclusion of staff, faculty, and the school community.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • HR Programming: Administers and oversees human resource programs including, but not limited to, compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; succession planning; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development. Embeds equity and inclusion into all HR practices, ensuring that policies and processes proactively support belonging and access for all.
  • Systems & Infrastructure: Audits and designs personnel systems and structures to ensure equitable access and removal of barriers to participation. Partners with CFOO and Head of School to ensure effective organizational structure, design, and staffing models. Evaluates the compensation process through an equity-informed lens to ensure clarity, transparency, and fairness.
  • Professional Development: Oversees required employee training. Provides coaching at all levels of the organization, collaborates with consultants and benefits partners, and designs training/professional development processes to support skill and competency development and alignment of behaviors with mission/values.
  • Employee Engagement & Retention: Collaborates with senior leadership to understand and guide the organization's goals and strategy related to staffing, recruiting, and retention. Designs, recommends, and executes interventions to continuously improve employee engagement and recognition.
  • Recruitment & Hiring: Collaborates with senior leadership to understand and guide the organization's goals and strategy related to staffing, recruiting, and retention.
  • Compliance: Monitors and ensures the organization's compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and industry best practices; reviews and modifies policies and practices to maintain compliance. Plans, leads, develops, coordinates, and implements policies, processes, trainings, initiatives, and surveys to support the organization's human resource compliance and strategy needs.
  • Budgeting: Develops and implements departmental budget. Makes data-informed decisions to ensure resource efficiency and alignment with strategic priorities.
  • Management: Supervises Payroll/Benefits Manager and HR Generalist.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 5+ years of HR experience with 3+ years of supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in shaping a positive culture and leading teams, both directly and via influence.
  • Outstanding communication, public speaking, and engagement skills, with the ability to inspire and influence diverse audiences.
  • Strong coaching and facilitation skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, Slack, and Zoom.
  • Familiarity with California employment law, wage/hour requirements, and knowledge around compliance requirements including ERISA, COBRA, FMLA, CFRA, ADA, PDL, DOL, OSHA, and Worker's Compensation.
  • Hands-on experience with payroll and HRIS systems with strong preference for Paycom.
  • PHR/SHRM-CP preferred.
  • Experience in HR in an independent school a plus.


COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

This opportunity offers a competitive salary range of $140,000–$170,000 (dependent on experience) and a comprehensive 12-month benefits package.
