Job Summary

Crystal seeks a full-time exempt (1.0 FTE, 12-month) Director of Human Resources to guide its people operations. Reporting to the Chief Financial and Operating Officer (CFOO), the Director of Human Resources (DHR) is a senior leader who partners across the school to develop and implement systems and structures that help to build an inclusive, engaged, and high-performing workplace aligned with Crystal’s mission and core values. This role directs the design, planning and implementation of Human Resource (HR) programs, policies, and procedures in support of the recruitment, retention, engagement, and inclusion of Crystal's thriving Professional Adult Community (PAC). The role is both operational and strategic in nature, leading and supporting efforts in:

  • payroll and benefits management
  • talent acquisition, management, and development
  • performance management and evaluation
  • employee relations
  • training and compliance
  • change management
  • organizational effectiveness.

Essential Functions

  • HR Programming: Administers and oversees human resource programs including, but not limited to, compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; succession planning; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development. Embeds equity and inclusion into all HR practices, ensuring that policies and processes proactively support belonging and access for all.
  • Systems/Structures: Audits and designs personnel systems and structures to ensure equitable access and removal of barriers to participation. Partners with CFOO and Head of School (HoS) to ensure effective organizational structure, design, and staffing models. Evaluates the compensation process through an equity-informed lens to ensure clarity, transparency, and fairness.
  • Professional Development: Oversees required employee training. Provides coaching at all levels of the organization, collaborates with consultants and benefits partners, and designs training/professional development processes to support skill and competency development and alignment of behaviors with mission/values.
  • Engagement/Retention: Collaborates with senior leadership to understand and guide the organization's goals and strategy related to staffing, recruiting, and retention. Designs, recommends, and executes interventions to continuously improve employee engagement and recognition.
  • Recruiting/Hiring: Identifies staffing and recruiting needs. Develops and executes best practices for hiring, on-boarding, and talent management. Partners with hiring managers to ensure equitable and inclusive hiring practices aligned with school values.
  • Compliance: Monitors and ensures the organization's compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and industry best practices; reviews and modifies policies and practices to maintain compliance. Plans, leads, develops, coordinates, and implements policies, processes, trainings, initiatives, and surveys to support the organization's human resource compliance and strategy needs.
  • Research/Analysis: Uses data to identify equity gaps, improve engagement, and enhance organizational health.
  • Best Practices: Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law; applies this knowledge to communicate changes in policy, practice, and resources to upper management.
  • Fiscal Stewardship: Develops and implements departmental budget. Makes data-informed decisions to ensure resource efficiency and alignment with strategic priorities.
  • Committees: Serves on the Professional Development Committee and Retirement Committee.
  • Supervision: Supervises Payroll and Benefits Manager and HR Generalist.

Travel Required

  • Light travel between the MS and US campuses
  • Occasional attendance at conferences or professional development events is encouraged and supported.

Required Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5+ years of HR experience
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience
  • Commitment to fostering equitable and inclusive environments
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in:
    • helping to shape a positive culture and a great place to learn and work
    • leading teams and accomplishing work through others, including project management
    • initiating and leading change, including motivating others, managing the key drivers of change, and overcoming obstacles
  • Strong coaching, consulting and facilitation skills
  • Strong technology skills with Google Suite, Microsoft Suite, Slack and Zoom
Preferred Education And Experience

  • Professional Certification in Human Resources. (e.g. PHR/SHRM-CP)
  • Familiarity with California employment law, wage/hour requirements, and compliance and recordkeeping requirements for various federal and state laws including but not limited to ERISA, COBRA, FMLA, CFRA, ADA, PDL, DOL, OSHA and Worker’s Compensation
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience with payroll and HRIS systems (Crystal currently uses Paycom)
  • Independent school experience

  • Able to work in a dynamic environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts
  • Able to lift up to 20 pounds
  • Able to climb stairs
  • May work at a desk and computer for extended periods

Salary And Benefits

This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position, and eligible for 12-month employee benefits. This position is an exempt position. The annual salary for this position is within the range of $140,000-$170,000 and will be based on work experience and education.
