Scope of the Role
FinRegLab is a nonprofit innovation center that advances the safe and smart use of data and technology in financial services to help families and small businesses get the financial products and tools they need to manage their daily lives and build more secure futures. With our research insights, we facilitate discourse across the financial ecosystem to inform market practices and public policy.
Reporting to the CEO, this role will be responsible for leading FinRegLab’s financial and operations functions to support stability and strategic growth. Beyond finance and accounting, this role facilitates and manages FinRegLab’s human resources, legal and insurance operations, technology, and facilities management. This is both a hands-on and supervisory role, with one initial direct report expected to focus on technology and facilities management, development support, and board support for the CEO. They will also manage or have oversight of vendors that support human resources, accounting/bookkeeping, and technology.
Core Responsibilities
Strategy and Compliance
- Work with the CEO and Deputy Director to facilitate business planning and strategy of finance, accounting, operations, technology, and human resources that supports the mission, vision, and values of the organization
- Work with the CEO, Audit Committee, and Board to maintain fiscal policies, investment strategies, and long-term financial stability, including financial modeling and analysis to build out new revenue streams
- Ensure the organization complies with all accounting regulations, legal requirements, employment rules, and other applicable regulations
- Design FinRegLab’s approach for using financial and operational metrics and look-back activities
Financial Management
- Lead both the annual budgeting and quarterly review process as well as ongoing program and grant budget monitoring
- Help leadership develop internal processes for grants and contract management
- Ensure staff follow and comply with all budget and finance requirements including expense reports, credit card processing, accurate invoicing, and fiduciary responsibilities
- Oversee and sign off on all statutory and regulatory compliance reporting, including grant reporting and operations
- Coordinate and manage the annual fiscal year-audit and IRS Form 990, experience with single-audits a plus
- With support from HR vendor and bookkeeping firm, actively oversee all daily accounting and financial operations including payroll processing, bank reconciliations, and cash management, accounts payable, and receivables
- Provide financial statement reporting and financial risks analysis to senior management
- In partnership with development function, track revenue pipelines, forecasting and FP&A
- Coordinate and manage the board audit committee and report financials at quarterly board meetings
- Lead all grant and expense reporting
- Be a strategic partner and advisor to leadership for key financial decisions
Human Resource Leadership
- Manage PEO vendor that provides a wide range of services, and serve as a liaison between them and organizational leadership on HR topics and initiatives
- Oversee operations related to hiring, onboarding, training process, and offboarding
- Manage performance management cycle and partner with the leadership to support staff learning and professional development
- Maintain and update, as needed, HR policies and resources, particularly for compensation and benefits and performance management
- Operations, Technology, and Office Oversight
- Oversee direct report and technology vendor in maintaining and continually improving processes, protocols, systems, communication, and reporting to advance organizational objectives related to, but not limited to, technology infrastructure and facilities in the Washington, DC office
- Manage contracts and serve as a point of contact for legal counsel
Qualifications
- 10+ years of professional experience with increasing responsibility, including financial and operations management. Experience in non-profit organizations of >$3 million and financial compliance of federal/government grants is required. Experience working with international projects is preferred.
- Experience managing and working with multiple funding sources, grants and a diverse set of program activities.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, or finance, or equivalent experience required; CPA certification a plus.
- Organization and project management skills; able to manage multiple tasks, priorities, funding sources, and stakeholders effectively in a changing and ambiguous environment; ability to generate results and complete projects within deadlines.
- Technologically savvy with experience working with finance/accounting software, including Quickbooks Online.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Track record of building authentic partnerships and relationships with fellow team members, community members, and organizations.
- Track record in setting priorities; keen analytic, organization and problem solving skills which support and enable sound decision making.
- Ability to translate financial concepts to – and to effectively collaborate with – leadership, programmatic and fundraising colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds.
- Strategic and inspiring, with the ability to set a vision for their team, and lead and manage others to deliver it.
- Demonstrated commitment to supporting and coaching people.
Location, Salary and Benefits
This position is based in Washington, D.C. and in line with our work hours and location guidelines for hybrid work, the expectation is to come into the office a minimum of 3 days a week.
Compensation will be commensurate with the overall experience level of successful applicants. Offers will include a competitive benefits package.
