Summary

General Description:

As a Digital Media and Communications Intern, you will be part of planning the Humane Society of St. Lucie County’s social media content and have a role in creating the marketing strategies for special adoption events and for our thrift store. You’ll gain hands-on experience in social media management, content creation, and non-profit communication, providing valuable skills for academic, personal, and professional growth.

Schedule

Humane Society of St. Lucie County’s Summer Digital Media & Communications Internship runs from 06/02/25 to 08/15/25


Interns must be available to work two days per week on the following days:

  • Monday or Tuesday - 4 to 6 hours
  • Thursday - 4 to 6 hours


Interns are expected to commit 8-12 hours per week. In-office presence required, with working hours scheduled between 9:00AM and 4:30PM. Interns will be able to split time between the shelter and thrift store.


Qualifications & Experience: 

  • Passion for Animals: A strong love for animals and comfort around cats and dogs of all ages and sizes
  • Sense of Community: Genuine enthusiasm and commitment to community and compassion
  • Educational Background: Currently pursuing a degree in a related field (e.g., graphic design, communications, marketing) showcasing dedication to learning and growth preferred.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficient with computers and familiar with tools like Microsoft Office, Canva, and Google Suite (or ability to learn quickly). Access to a personal laptop is required.
  • Self-Motivated and Organized: Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines independently.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey our mission and initiatives.
  • Reliable Transportation: Must have dependable transportation to fulfill internship responsibilities


Responsibilities & Duties

  • Social Media Management: Create engaging content for the shelter and thrift store’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and TikTok. Collaborate on planning and scheduling content to maximize impact.
  • Graphic Design and Marketing: Develop eye-catching graphics and marketing materials for various events, programs, and initiatives, contributing to the visual appeal of campaigns.
  • Event Assistance: Contribute to the planning of and attend TWO large-scale adoption events and participate in ONE planning committee.
  • Exceptional Customer Service: Interact with community members across various communication channels, including online, phone, and in-person, delivering exceptional customer service and fostering positive relationships.
  • Adaptable Assistance: Be prepared to assist with tasks as needed, showcasing flexibility and willingness to contribute to various aspects of our organization’s activities.


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Allergy Notice: Interns WILL be working in a high-allergen environment and sometimes, directly with cats or dogs. Candidates should reconsider their application if they have pre-existing allergies exacerbated by exposure to animals, chemicals used for sanitation, facilities, vehicles, or equipment.
  • Nature of the Job: Due to the nature of this role, there may be occasional exposure to deceased, injured, sick, unruly, vicious, and/or dangerous animals. Additionally, exposure to parasites or infectious diseases is possible.
  • Job Duties: Successful candidates must be willing and physically able to perform all duties listed in the job description. This includes tasks that may involve varying levels of physical activity and interaction with animals.
