About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Design Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role demands a unique blend of consumer-focussed design and engineering skills — an engineer with design literacy and a focus on creating innovative and technically sound solutions.

The Design Engineer will play a crucial role in bridging the gap between design and technology, ensuring that our products are not only visually appealing but also technically robust leveraging cutting edge AI technologies.

Design Engineers at JMI will blend aesthetic sensibility with technical skills. This allows us to deeply understand a problem, then design, build, and ship a solution autonomously and at high velocity.

Problems you'll solve & experiences you'll build

Solve: Moving home is notoriously stressful; it involves managing multiple lengthy timelines and seemingly endless admin. You'll help reduce stress and save people time and money.

Think essentials: removals, energy, broadband, mail-redirection, council tax, insurance, and more.

We're building the go-to place for home and financial services. Eventually, our product will not only help people set up and manage services when they are moving, but also before and after the move.

Build:

• A seamless, omni-channel product experience: native apps, responsive web, WhatsApp journeys, and human interactions
• The smartest AI moving and service assistant, creating intuitive and valuable AI-user interactions
• An optimised e-commerce experience through data-driven bundling, intuitive UI/UX, and strategic re-engagement

Key Responsibilities:

• Design Excellence: Develop and refine scalable, consistent, visually compelling design systems. Reimagine how users intuitively interact with AI across multiple channels
• Front-End Development: Build creative, responsive, performant, visually outstanding front-end experience that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible. Collaborate closely with backend and AI engineers to ensure seamless integration and scalability
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with a talented team of engineers, designers, and AI specialists to deliver robust, scalable, and delightful solutions
• Strategy & User Research: Deeply understand our strategic vision, conduct user research, analyse customer journeys, and leverage data-driven insights for impactful product design
• Liaise between the design and engineering teams in the organisation, acting as a bridge for better communication and handoff
• Create high-fidelity in-browser prototypes

Qualifications

• 7+ years designing in design and engineering. Building innovative digital products across web and mobile (iOS, Android) at consumer tech companies known for their world-class design
• Experience in fintech and e-commerce in particular is very relevant to our problem statements
• Proven track record in creating world-class user experiences with measurable economic impact
• Experience in building intuitive AI-powered experiences is strongly preferred
• Ability to translate strategic objectives into compelling user experiences
• Experience developing and implementing design systems and UI best practices. Must have extremely high user empathy
• Excellent communicator, comfortable clearly articulating ideas and concepts
• Passionate about intuitive UX and obsessed with user-centric design
• Utilises design frameworks and thinking to build rapid prototypes, and move at pace from concept to successful scaled live products
• Strong portfolio showcasing your ability to create innovative and technically sound solutions
• Comfortable navigating design software such as Figma and prototyping tools like ionic and capacitor

• Frontend: Next.js (React Native in the future)
• ML/AI: Generative AI frameworks (Pydantic AI, LangGraph), LLM integration tools (Logging: Logfire, LangSmith)
• Databases: MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis

Interview Process

1. First round with COO/Head of Product — 45 minutes (portfolio discussion) + Engineering test & basic case JMI case study (reviewed by interview panel)
2. Second round Case study run through + existing work run through. Intention is the thought process, taking for granted coding is there
3. Final round
4. Chat with Head of Product
5. Chat with senior members of the team (what its like working with peers, deeper technical deep dive)
