Your Role: You'll play a vital leadership role in mentoring and developing a Database Administration team responsible for designing, implementing, and administration of all databases at USLI. Your efforts will center around team building, skill development and ensuring that both business and technical objectives are met. You'll collaborate with leadership, peers and the broader community to foster growth, efficiency and innovation. Key Responsibilities: * Coach and mentor your team: Build a strong team by coaching direct reports on performance and development goals * Develop individual growth plans: Create relationships that support collaboration on individual development plans for each team member * Hold regular 1:1s and reviews: Maintain consistent performance feedback through one-on-one meetings and periodic evaluations * Foster a positive team environment: Cultivate a team culture that encourages feedback, engagement and motivation * Support skill development: Help team members improve both technical and communication skills * Collaborate with other leaders: Work with leadership peers to identify opportunities for team development and improved performance * Guide prioritization: Assist team members in managing workload, understanding requests and aligning tasks with business goals * Drive process improvements: Partner with leadership to propose and implement creative solutions to enhance operations * Engage with the community: Communicate with internal stakeholders and sometimes external customers to gather requirements, provide updates and clarify project scopes * Model community values: Lead by example in demonstrating commitment to USLI's Community Goals * Bridge IT and business knowledge: Encourage developers to understand the business side and apply that knowledge to their work * Promote technical discipline: Uphold and support best practices in software development and design * Lead recruiting efforts: Participate in interviewing prospective developer candidates, including college-level candidates * Communicate expectations: Clearly define scope, commitments and timelines in collaboration with the architecture and leadership teams * Encourage ongoing learning: Support your team in exploring emerging technologies and expanding their insurance knowledge What You'll Bring: * Leadership experience: More than six years of software development and direct report management experience * Technical knowledge: Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server and Windows Server * Strong communication skills: Excellent verbal and written abilities to guide, inform and collaborate * Analytical thinking: Ability to identify problems, evaluate solutions and act strategically * Organizational skills: Strong ability to prioritize, delegate and manage team capacity * Commitment to best practices: Solid understanding of software implementation methodologies, including Scrum * Desire for continuous learning: Willingness to enroll in courses, stay updated on technology trends and promote development plans Qualifications: * College degree or technical certifications, or equivalent industry/technical experience * More than six years of professional experience in software development with leadership responsibility * Proficiency in database administration technologies (e.g., SQL Server, SQL Sentry, PowerShell) * Strong understanding of software development life cycles, including Agile methodologies * Excellent written and verbal communication skills * Proven ability to mentor, develop and lead technical teams * Strong business acumen and a willingness to learn about the insurance industry and USLI's business model * Ability to work the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET onsite, with some overtime as needed What We Offer: One of the advantages of working at USLI is the competitive salary and benefits program we offer full-time and eligible part-time employees.
