Job Description:

On behalf of our client, Affinity is seeking a Database Administrator (DBA) to join the Digital Technology Services (DTS) team at a leading university. Reporting to the Manager, Business Systems, the DBA will be responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and security of the university’s databases, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and data integrity. This role will support the university community by delivering robust database solutions and collaborating with cross-functional teams to meet organizational needs.


Responsibilities:

• Develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures for database access, usage, backup, and recovery, including network and web database systems.

• Write scripts for stored procedures and perform routine maintenance tasks such as log monitoring, backups, restores, and database optimization.

• Proactively monitor and troubleshoot database performance, identifying opportunities for optimization, tuning, and capacity planning to minimize downtime.

• Collaborate with the DTS cybersecurity team to implement security measures, including user authentication, access controls, encryption, and auditing, to protect databases from unauthorized access and threats.

• Execute database upgrades, patches, and migrations while ensuring minimal disruption to operations.

• Provide technical support to users and DTS staff, resolving database-related issues promptly.

• Create and maintain comprehensive documentation, including database schemas, configuration settings, and troubleshooting procedures.

• Design, develop, and implement databases by evaluating data requirements, application software, business processes, and data models, adhering to System Development Lifecycle (SDLC) methodologies.

• Utilize ITIL framework change and release management practices to deliver digital solutions.

• Collaborate with DTS colleagues, academic departments, administrative units, and vendors to support university initiatives and ensure community needs are met.

• Generate database usage reports, configure analytics tools, and provide recommendations to DTS leadership.

• Apply DTS project lifecycle processes and tools to organize and deliver high-quality digital solutions.

Qualifications:

• 5+ years of progressive professional experience in database administration, including 2 years in a public institution.

• Expertise in administering Oracle, MySQL, and Microsoft SQL Server databases and application servers.

• Proficiency in SQL DDL, DML, and DQL syntax and techniques in Oracle, MySQL, or Microsoft SQL Server environments.

• Extensive knowledge of Unix/Linux and Microsoft Windows operating systems.

• Experience with programming languages, shell scripting, and administration of web and application servers.

• Strong understanding of database design principles, data modeling, data analytics, and normalization techniques.

• Proven skills in database performance tuning, optimization, and troubleshooting.

• Knowledge of database security practices, including user authentication, access controls, and encryption.

• Experience gathering and documenting end-user requirements, developing use cases, test plans, and test scripts, and conducting system testing.

• Ability to produce high-quality, clear, and concise documentation for business system implementation and support.

• A bachelor’s degree in an IT-related discipline.

• Certification as either Oracle OCP, Microsoft MCDBA, MCSD, or MCSE.

• Experience with SDLC, project management, and change management methodologies.

• Familiarity with the ITIL framework and ITSM best practices; ITIL certification is an asset.

• Strong communication skills to effectively convey technical information to diverse audiences, including staff, faculty, students, and vendors.

• Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams, exercise tact and discretion, and adapt to changing priorities while meeting deadlines.
