Summary

The role of the Data Governance Officer is to embed data governance practices, structures and controls across the systems and functions of the Courts Service. As a member of the Data Unit, the officer will play a key role in strengthening the management, quality, and sharing of data to support service delivery, legal obligations, and strategic decision-making.

This includes the following:

  • Contributing to policy and procedure creation to improve data management
  • Cataloguing and tracking data across all aspects of its lifecycle
  • Implementation of measures to improve data quality, inc a data quality framework
  • Monitoring the progress, status updates and reviews of our strategies
  • Implementation of data retention, including transfers to the National Archives
  • Implementation of systems, processes to improve document and records management
  • Improving data awareness in the organisation through training and literacy measures
  • Implementing and managing data sharing initiatives
  • Ensuring data protection and data privacy by design processes are embedded


This role, which reports to the Head of Data Governance and Sharing, will suit a well-rounded individual with a broad range of data skills and experience. The successful candidate will have expertise and experience in data management, data governance and data protection across the full data lifecycle.

The role involves engagement with different business units across the Courts Service, the candidate must demonstrate strong communication, interpersonal skills and attention to detail whilst also being capable of managing projects. The role contributes to a wider ICT team driving digital and data transformation that meet the Courts Service business needs and strategic goals.


Key Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities

  • Assist with development of strategies and plans.
  • Implement and support all data retention activities across the organisation.
  • Deliver systems, tools and processes to improve document management
  • Monitor and review Data Sharing agreements and Data Processing agreements.
  • Define, document and implement data policies, procedures and standards/guidelines.
  • Design and implement data quality initiatives.
  • Validate and perform testing and quality checks on data.
  • Catalogue and track data across all aspects of its lifecycle.
  • Provide clear documentation and reports for any deliverables.
  • Train users in data retention and other data related initiatives
  • Develop communication materials to build awareness of data activities.
  • Work closely with other members of the data team, Data Protection Office, other ICT teams, contractors, vendors, and business stakeholders.

Essential Requirements

Applicants should have a related qualification and at least 4 years’ relevant and recent experience for this role.
