Controls Engineer Manager

Our Controls and Instrumentation Engineer Manager in Pittsfield, MA supports Mativ's Filtration and Advanced Materials Segment. The incumbent will lead the design and implementation of capital or expense controls, instrument, AI, and automation projects through new design and installation or modification of existing equipment. The position requires technical knowledge and the ability to lead the controls, and instrumentation team. Will provide engineering support to the engineering staff, manufacturing, and maintenance operations relative to updated and new controls, instruments, AI, and automation. This individual specifies, develops, and maintains control and measurement systems. Process control and instrumentation technology at Mativ encompasses PLC-based manufacturing automation systems and operator interfaces. This includes computer networks, data historians, distributed control systems (DCS), special controllers (drives, stand-alone controllers, safety systems, analyzers, etc.), IoT devices and infrastructure, and associated field instruments.
This position will report to the Plant Manager and oversee the Systems Specialists (Process Control, Electrical, and Mechanical).
Responsibilities:
* Supports key EHS initiatives that focus on regulatory compliance and eliminating loss potential.
* Leads by example and participates in the development and implementation of safety programs, activities, and initiatives.
* Manages and executes complex process control systems and equipment integration projects of small to medium size and significant complexity simultaneously.
* Manages the technology roadmap for the continued development of next-generation proprietary equipment used in our product manufacturing.
* Prioritizes projects and resources to be on time delivery, on budget, and to specification.
* Collaborates and influences cross-functionally with team members, customers, and/or leaders, along with suppliers.
* Manages a team of resources through coaching, training, and development in order to achieve measurable improvements in terms of costs, methods, and employees.
* Manages vendors and contractors as required to fulfill assigned duties, including sourcing, and contracting with the vendors and contractors.
* Identifies opportunities for equipment improvements with an emphasis on process automation and efficiency.
* Explores multiple alternatives to achieve productivity and performance objectives.
* Collaborates with the operations, quality, and process engineering team members to ensure successful project implementation including a smooth transition from qualification to steady-state operation.
* Collaborates with the plant and engineering team to ensure satisfactory designs and implementation of projects.
* Stays current concerning new research, design methodology, equipment/solution availability and investigates their potential application to Mativ business.
* Writes, validates, and commissions automation control (PLC, drives, HMI) programs.
* Prepares detailed schematic drawings using CAD software.
* Troubleshoots existing control and automation systems.
* Identifies equipment/system control needs (new and replacement) and makes recommendations.
* Assists or leads in preparing asset appropriation requests.
* Manages end-to-end projects from proposal development through procurement, commissioning, validation, product qualification, and production handover.
* Manages third-party project delivery.
* Stores work products (electronic files, PLC programs, etc.) and data in prescribed content locations.
* Delivers periodic project status updates including budget, schedule, key decisions, and risk assessments.
* Travel to other Mativ plants for consultation, project research, and knowledge-sharing purposes.
* Other duties and responsibilities as assigned or deemed necessary by management.
Qualifications:
Required
* Knowledge of current OSHA, NFPA, UL/CE, and standards.
* Skilled in articulating complex system designs and concepts in an easily understandable manner.
* Well-versed in managing vendors with the goals of confirming design suitability, adherence to standards, and controlling cost.
* Experience with Automation System design and deployment, specifically Allen-Bradley PLC's.
* Experience with HMI development and implementation, specifically AVEVA System Platform and Allen-Bradley PanelView
* Experienced in implementing Variable Frequency Drives and servo control systems.
* Experienced in Industry 4.0 implementation with historical data collection.
* Experience with Vision Inspection systems such as ISRA.
* Skilled in industrial protocols such as Ethernet, EthernetIP, Allen-Bradley Data Highway, ControlNet, and RIO.
* Skilled in OLE for Process Control (OPC) tools such as AVEVA OI Gateway Servers.
* Skilled in computer-aided design systems such as AutoCAD
* Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
* May require travel several times a year.
Education & Experience
* B.S. Degree in Engineering or related technical discipline or equivalent experience
* Minimum of 4 years of experience in the papermaking, or nonwovens industry (a plus)
* Experience managing capital projects (a plus)
* Six Sigma or Green Belt certifications desired or experience working in a Lean Manufacturing environment.

Compensation Statement
The annual salary range for this position is $123,000 - $127,500. This role is also short-term incentive plan eligible.
