Summary

Job Title: Financial Controller

Location: Halifax Nova Scotia

Employment Type: Full-Time

Reports To: CFO / CEO

Job Summary:

The Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial and accounting operations of the company, with a strong emphasis on financial management, project costing, budgeting, and regulatory compliance. This role plays a critical part in guiding financial strategy and ensuring the company’s fiscal health and performance.


Key Responsibilities:

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with Canadian GAAP/ASPE.
  • Manage and oversee all accounting functions including A/P, A/R, payroll, bank reconciliations, and general ledger entries.
  • Conduct monthly project cost reviews and variance analysis against budgets.


Project & Job Costing

  • Develop and maintain project-specific financial models and forecasts.
  • Work closely with project managers and estimators to track job costs and profitability.
  • Monitor contract billing, change orders, and work-in-progress (WIP) schedules.


Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Lead the annual budgeting process and provide ongoing forecasting updates.
  • Track key KPIs related to margin, overhead recovery, cash flow, and project performance.


Compliance & Internal Controls

  • Ensure compliance with CRA tax regulations and industry-specific reporting.
  • Oversee year-end audit and liaison with external accountants and auditors.
  • Implement and maintain robust internal control systems.


Leadership & Strategy

  • Support executive leadership with strategic financial planning and risk assessment.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff and support cross-functional financial training.
  • Provide financial insights to help guide project bids, expansion, and investments.


Qualifications:

  • CPA designation (or in progress) required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of accounting experience, preferably in the construction or real estate development sector.
  • Strong knowledge of construction accounting standards (percentage of completion method, holdbacks, bonding).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with project managers, vendors, and stakeholders.
