Position Overview

This contracted position is a safety‐sensitive position. As a result, throughout employment this position will be subject to the Employee Mandatory Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy.
Biomedical Sciences is one of 24 Career and Technical Education pathways in DCPS. The Pharmacy Technician training program is designed to support the current Biomedical Sciences pathway by training students in the fundamentals of Pharmacy as outlined by the District of Columbia Department of Health. Required curriculum topics for instruction are outlined below:
1.Roles and responsibilities of pharmacy technician
2. Knowledge of prescription medications
3. Knowledge of strengths or dose, dosage forms, physical appearance, routes of administration, and
duration of drug therapy
4. The dispensing process
5. Pharmaceutical calculations
6. Interacting with patients
7. Third party prescriptions
8. Sterile and non-sterile compounding
9. Requirements and professional standards for:
a) Preparing
b) Labeling
c) Dispensing
d) Storing
e) Pre-packaging
f) Distributing
g) How medicines are administered
10. Confidentiality
11. Drugs used to treat major chronic conditions
12. Federal and District laws and regulations governing controlled substances and the practice of pharmacy
13. Knowledge of special dosing considerations for pediatric and geriatric populations
Prior industry experience in pharmacy is required.
The educator in this position will report to the NAF Academy Director and the school Principal.

Coordinates with the DCPS Career Education team to order equipment, maintain accurate inventory, and advocate for material needs of the program.

Develops and implements curricula and activities to meet academic standards.
Thoughtfully plans daily lessons and implements specific strategies to meet the needs of all students, providing extra support, enrichment, or variation of work when necessary.

Qualifications
This contracted position requires the work schedule equivalent of 4 hours per day for a total of 20 hours per week at Calvin Coolidge High School to teach and manage the Pharmacy Technician Training program. The position will also oversee the students’ clinical laboratory practicum hours and will handle other administrative duties as described by the DC Department of Health. This position may require the educator to be available on some weeknights or weekends for practicum training if needed. The hourly rate for this position is $50/hour. Hours will be confirmed by the NAF Academy Director. The contracted dates for this position are October 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024. The position will be renewed annually. Other requirements of the candidate are as follows:
B.S. or PharmD degree from an accredited college or university.
Proficient in the use of simulation equipment, lab procedures, technology, etc. required.
Two or more years of industry-related experience preferred. Hospital setting experience strongly preferred.
Previous exposure to or experience in the education sector a plus.
Strong instructional skills and classroom management.
