Summary

We are partnering with our Northern California health policy organization client to recruit a Senior Communications and Public Affairs Manager to join their team on a permanent basis, working anywhere based in California and traveling the state. In this role, you will curate all communications for the organization and lead a small team in execution of PR, media and similar campaigns. Your primary goal will be shaping organizational reputation through media and PR strategy, securing placement, managing crisis communications and ensuring cohesion across the organization's brand and message. Your team will guide digital communications, including social media strategy and digital reputation management. You will manage a small team of direct reports and should have experience in people management previously, as hiring, coaching and budget management for the department will be under your purview. To be a fit, you should bring 7+ years of public affairs and communications experience working in policy, civic or similar non-profit organizations. Experience in health policy is strongly preferred.

While this role is primarily remote, being California based and comfortable traveling across the state is absolutely required, and this role will feel closer to hybrid because of this. Compensation ranges based on level of experience and relevant industry background from $130,000 to $150,000 with potential flexibility for an incredible match. You will:

  • Curate all communications for the organization, leading a small team in crafting strategy, managing media relationships, crafting strategic campaigns and ensuring overall cohesion in organizational messaging, amplifying the voice of Californians
  • Scope strategic campaigns that drive policy change and awareness, networking with community and government leaders, media outlets, and similar to influence policy decisions in the healthcare space
  • Manage a small team of communications staff, overseeing hiring, performance management and departmental budgets and goals
  • Own media relations, crisis communications and executive communications strategy
  • Leverage the organization's progressive values and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in all actions


Your experience should include:

  • 7+ years of manager level or higher communications and public policy experience
  • Experience working in a public policy or non-profit organization with a strong preference for healthcare or adjacent spaces
  • In-depth media relations, crisis communications and executive communications experience with comfort tactically owning these duties
  • Experience guiding overall communications for a similar department, including member communications, email campaigns, social media and similar
  • Dedicated people management and budget management experience leading direct reports
