We are a leading publisher in the fields of archaeology, ancient history and medieval studies, with an international reputation for quality and affordability earned over the last 40 years. Our readership includes academics and students, professionals working in the field worldwide, and a wider audience of readers with a specialist interest in archaeology and history.

We are looking for an experienced commissioning editor to join our small, dedicated editorial team to commission up to 60 books into the Oxbow imprint annually, and lead expansion into new growth areas.

Key responsibilities include:

• Commissioning and acquiring new book projects in archaeology and heritage studies.
• Developing a strategic publishing plan.
• Guiding projects from proposal stage through peer review, contract negotiation, and production
• Collaborating closely with marketing, sales, and production teams to ensure the successful launch and promotion of titles.
• Meeting annual acquisition and revenue targets.
• Attending conferences and building relationships with leading scholars, institutions, and contributors in the field.
• Collaborating and communicating effectively with authors and internal and external stakeholders.

Successful candidate will have:

• At least five years’ experience of book commissioning.
• Background in archaeology/ancient history or related subjects, preferably to degree level.
• Strong network within the academic archaeology community.
• Excellent editorial judgment, communication, and negotiation skills.
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Commercial awareness and understanding of current academic publishing models.
• Experience with peer review and academic integrity practices.
