Our background

The Fairlo story began thirty years ago with the family of our founders Jimmy and Shamon fleeing political turmoil and ending up in Sweden. Struggling to give her children all that they desired, Jimmy and Shamon’s mother took a small unsecured loan. It seemed like a good deal but it quickly turned sour as the loan increased in size in spite of the continuous payments. Much later, having grown up, the two brothers revisited this incident and it became the spark that ignited the Fairlo vision. The fact that a trusted bank took predatory advantage of their family, when they were the most vulnerable, became the starting point of a quest to create a fair credit service. Since the start about six years ago, we've been working tirelessly to live up to the vision of an honest and easy-to-understand credit service. Without toxic terms, sneaky fine print, and nasty surprises.

What you'll do

As a Cloud engineer and Data / Backend engineer at Fairlo, you will play a central role in developing and maintaining our core technology. This role is uniquely split: 50% of your time will be dedicated to building and managing our AWS cloud, and the remaining 50% will be focused on either backend development or data engineering, depending on your background and interests.

In your cloud work, you’ll design, implement, and manage scalable, secure, and reliable AWS architectures using tools like CloudFormation, Terraform, SAM, or CDK. You’ll take responsibility for platform security, performance, and scalability - ensuring our systems are ready to grow and evolve with us.

If your strength lies in backend development, you’ll be building and optimizing backend services and APIs, primarily using Node.js.

If your interest is more in data engineering, you’ll work on improving how we collect, store, and process data across our platform, helping build data pipelines, improve data quality, and support analytics and decision-making throughout Fairlo.

In this role, you’ll split your focus between either backend development or data development, and building robust infrastructure on AWS. You’ll be expected to take ownership of ensuring the platform is secure, scalable, and reliable. This includes proactively establishing and maintaining a strong security posture, identifying opportunities for upgrades and optimizations, and driving continuous improvements.

We embrace a startup mindset, where taking ownership and wearing multiple hats is encouraged. Your role will be shaped not just by our needs, but by your interests and imagination.

Requirements

We’re looking for a senior engineer with a role split evenly between cloud engineering and backend or data engineering. You should have strong programming and architectural skills, with a sharp focus on performance, reliability, and scalability. You should have experience in:

Backend or Data Engineering

Depending on your background, you bring deep expertise in one of the following areas.

• Backend Development – Building, maintaining, and optimizing backend services using modern frameworks such as Node.js (preferred), .NET Core, or Java.

Or

• Data Engineering – Designing and maintaining ETL pipelines, optimizing data workflows, and working with large-scale datasets to support analytics and operational needs.

Cloud Engineering

• Cloud Architecture – Designing and implementing scalable, reliable, and secure solutions in AWS.
• Infrastructure as Code – Managing cloud infrastructure using tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, AWS SAM, or CDK.
• Platform Ownership – Proactively maintaining and improving the cloud platform, addressing security and performance needs, and ensuring operational excellence.

To succeed in this role, you’ll need a self-driven and proactive mindset, a passion for identifying and solving challenges, and the ability to take initiative in securing and improving the platform.
