Completion of a recognized medical terminology course or program, Level I and II
Office Administration Medical Diploma, Health Unit Clerk Certificate with medical terminology course (I and II, or equivalent), or equivalent education and experience
Heart Saver certification completed within the last twelve (12) months
Two (2) years of Clerk III patient care unit experience in the last five (5) years
Demonstrated working knowledge of Electronic Health Records (EHR) applications, applicable to a hospital setting including ADT, Clinical Systems, and Electronic Document Management
Proficiency with Microsoft programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint), as well as Internet applications and other Information Technology
Neat, accurate keyboarding with minimum 50 wpm
Evidence of continuing education and/or attendance at related in-services
Ability to maintain effective and respectful interpersonal relationships
Demonstrated organizational skills, and the ability to work independently

Position Summary
The Clerk IV - Emergency strives to provide the highest possible standard of service for patients, public, medical and hospital staff. The Clerk IV - Emergency is responsible for providing clerical support to the Emergency Department and Observation Department, as well as to provide Admitting and Medical Records support to the Brandon Regional Health Centre when those departments are not operating.
Responsibilities
The Clerk IV - Emergency is responsible for providing the essential clerical duties to ensure the ongoing safe and rapid care of the patients during the times when the Admitting and Medical records departments are at minimal staffing and when Unit Clerks are not on the Nursing Units (e.g. late evenings and nights).
Overview
Process doctors' orders including standing orders.
Contact other departments and arrange coordinated care for patients either at present time or as outpatients.
Maintain patient information in the Emergency Department Information System (EDIS).
Communicate with nursing staff regarding treatment or medication orders.
Monitor the return of lab results, etc. and communicate this to nurses and physicians.
Perform record searches for Drug Program Information Network (DPIN) when required.
Order air and ground ambulances when required for patient transfers. Complete all appropriate forms, notify the designated areas involved in the process; photocopy and arrange for all records that need to accompany the patient.
Manual completion of daily and monthly statistical reports for the Emergency and Observation Units.
Communicate with patients and family.
Perform clerical duties such as send faxes, open/sort incoming mail, typing, order department supplies.
Order required department supplies.
Assist staff in locating appropriate forms, supplies etc.
Ensure charts are made up as required (OR bundles, observation charts).
Ensure patient charts are complete and either sent with the patient to the wards or filed as appropriate.
Maintain patient charts and assemble after discharge.
Assist at the Emergency Department desk by performing the clerical duties essential to effective delivery of patient care.
The Clerk IV - Emergency may be responsible for the following duties when providing relief to the Patient Registration staff: * Maintain accurate information of patient demographics, and admission / discharge / transfer information in the central patient index computer system. * Register all patients coming to the Emergency Department as well as any other area of the Brandon Regional Health Centre. * Perform admission / transfer / discharge for all patients within the Brandon Regional Health Centre. * Locate and retrieve health records for the Emergency Department, and admissions to the nursing units. * Lock up patient valuables.
