Summary

Overview The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is seeking an experienced Civil Engineer to join our Structures/Hydraulics Section. This team leads the development and design of plans, specifications, and estimates for statewide infrastructure projects, including bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and related structures. We are currently hiring for both Structural and Hydraulic design roles. This position is located at Barre City Place in Barre, Vermont. In this role, you will focus on hydraulic design work, performing and reviewing advanced hydraulic analyses for bridges and culverts. You will simulate complex flow conditions under varying storm events, assess the risk of scour and erosion, and develop design solutions that protect Vermont's infrastructure while supporting ecological function. You will work closely with a diverse team of engineers, architects, environmental specialists, and planners to ensure integrated, sustainable project outcomes.You will also be responsible for preparing technical documentation, including reports, drawings, and specifications, and for providing oversight and leadership on projects from initiation through completion. Successful candidates for the Civil Engineer IV level will bring the following qualifications: * Advanced knowledge of two- and one-dimensional bridge hydraulic modeling and tools such as SMS/SHR-2D, HEC-RAS, and HY8 * Working knowledge of GIS platforms such as ArcGIS or QGIS * Advanced knowledge of hydrologic modeling and calculations * Advanced expertise in scour evaluation and countermeasure design using HEC-18 and HEC-23 * Working knowledge of fluvial geomorphology and aquatic organism passage (AOP) * Strong collaboration skills and the ability to independently manage engineering assignments from start to finish This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned engineer looking to lead meaningful, technically challenging work that supports Vermont's infrastructure and environment.
