Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced and licensed Civil Design Project Manager to lead and grow the civil engineering discipline in our San Luis Obispo office, which currently focuses on surveying. This role is a pivotal leadership opportunity for a driven engineer to take ownership of design projects while helping to establish and expand a local civil design team.


This position is ideal for a candidate who is confident in independent design, capable of managing projects from start to finish, and ready to play a foundational role in the strategic growth of the office. You will have strong remote support and oversight from leadership in Northern California.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform all aspects of civil site development design, including grading, drainage, utility layout, and stormwater management.
  • Manage full project cycles—from feasibility and conceptual planning to construction documents and agency approvals.
  • Provide technical oversight and quality control on all design deliverables.
  • Serve as the point of contact for clients, agencies, and consultants in the San Luis Obispo region.
  • Collaborate with remote project managers and senior leadership to align on design standards and project milestones.
  • Mentor and assist in hiring future civil engineering staff for the San Luis Obispo office.
  • Conduct site visits, coordinate with survey and architectural teams, and respond to RFIs and contractor submittals.
  • Prepare reports, design calculations, cost estimates, and permit applications.


Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in civil site development and land development design.
  • California PE license (Preferred).
  • Proven ability to independently lead civil design projects and communicate directly with clients and public agencies.
  • Strong technical proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and other tools such as HydroCAD, WaterCAD, AutoTurn, etc.
  • In-depth knowledge of grading, hydrology, stormwater quality, utility infrastructure, and local/state design codes.
  • Previous experience mentoring junior engineers or helping grow a team is highly preferred.
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
