Chemistry/Physics Lab Manager - Instruction And Classroom Support Technician 4
SALARY: $54,204 - $61,404
LOCATION: Lynnwood, Washington
DESCRIPTION: The Chemistry/Physics Department at Edmonds College is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Instruction and Classroom Support Technician 4 (Lab Manager) to oversee the efficient and safe operation of our laboratories. A key focus of this role is the preparation, setup, and breakdown of laboratory activities to ensure a productive learning environment for students and faculty.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
* Prioritize and execute the daily proper setup and breakdown of all laboratory experiments and demonstrations. This includes ensuring all necessary materials, equipment, and reagents are readily available and correctly positioned before lab sessions, and that all items are properly cleaned, stored, and accounted for afterwards.
* Maintain and enforce rigorous laboratory safety procedures and protocols.
* Ensure the cleanliness and organization of all laboratory spaces, including regular cleaning and waste disposal.
* Manage the inventory and ordering of all necessary laboratory supplies and equipment.
* Manage and reconcile the departmental laboratory budget, tracking expenditures and ensuring cost-effectiveness.
* Hire and manage student laboratory employees, delegating tasks as needed.
* Collaborate with faculty on lab design, and assist in testing and troubleshooting equipment and/or procedures for various demonstrations and laboratory activities.
* Operate and perform routine maintenance on a wide range of laboratory and demonstration instruments and equipment.
* Instruct students and faculty on the proper and safe use of laboratory equipment.
* Adhere to all safety protocols, including relevant industry safety standards, those related to the handling of organic and inorganic chemicals, and the operation of typical and atypical laboratory equipment.
This is a classified staff position that reports to the Dean of STEM.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Bachelor¿s degree in chemistry, physics, or a related area.
* At least one academic year of experience working in a lab environment (research assistant, lab technician, etc.).
* Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
* Ability to work effectively in an environment rich with diverse cultures.
* Proficiency in maintaining and operating chemical instrumentation.
* Ability to work independently, adapt and respond to last-minute changes, prioritize competing demands, and track and reconcile budgetary expenditures.
* Knowledge of hazardous waste disposal practices and green chemistry.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Master's degree in chemistry, physics, or a related area.
* Coursework or practical application of chemistry and physics.
* Proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Suite.
* Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills.
* Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with faculty, staff, and students.
* Experience supporting college-level science laboratory curriculum for multiple classes and/or departments.
* Ability to use and maintain analytical chemistry equipment (GC-MS, FTIR, AAS, NMR)
* Ability to use, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment used in a physics lab environment.
PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position requires the physical ability to perform work common to an academic, science-related laboratory setting. This may include standing for long periods, stooping, bending, climbing on step stools, and lifting or moving objects up to 30 lbs. There is exposure to organic and inorganic chemicals, and the use of typical laboratory equipment and power tools. Knowledge and implementation of safety practices are essential to this position. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are essential. This includes the ability to speak clearly and fully comprehend written and spoken English, and will include communication with people for whom English is a second language.
WORK SCHEDULE:
A typical work week is 8 hours a day, 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday; the specific schedule will be determined by the lab's needs.
Saturdays and/or evenings may occasionally be needed to support scheduled classes/labs and/or special events. Scheduling changes will be updated according to the collective bargaining agreement.
COMPENSATION:
Salary range 51. Beginning salary is $54,204 - $61,404 annually, with progressive increases to $72,924, plus a full state benefits package, which includes tuition waivers for college classes, medical, dental, retirement options, and more. The vacation and leave package includes 12 sick days per year, 11 scheduled holidays, 1 personal holiday, 3 personal leave days, and 14 vacation days per year (incremental increases to 24 vacation days per year).
